"You... you have a boyfriend?" Lewis looked genuinely confused.
If Catherine really had a boyfriend or even a husband, why had she gone on that blind date? She should have told him as soon as he started showing interest in her.
Catherine hesitated, struggling to find the right words. She couldn't answer him right away.
Lewis paused for a second, then his face settled back into a calm expression. "Sorry. I hope I haven't caused you any trouble?" He was talking about his morning and evening texts, and all those office rumors. He wondered if the baby's father had heard anything.
"Sorry, I was a bit out of line," Catherine replied, giving him a small nod. The whole Amanda situation had left her completely drained. She'd been so upset, she just blurted something out without thinking. Telling Lewis she was pregnant didn't really matter, since he barely knew Lance. Still, her tone hadn't been great.
"It's fine," Lewis said, stepping aside to put a little space between them. "I'm here to pick up my mom from the hospital. They're waiting for me, so I'll get going."
Catherine nodded again.
They went their separate ways at the hospital entrance, each heading in a different direction.
When Catherine got home, Lorinda was still asleep. She played with Jasper until lunchtime, and only then did Lorinda finally drag herself out of bed.
Lorinda flopped onto the couch, leaned her head on Catherine's shoulder, and scooped Jasper into her arms.
"Hey, little man, are you going to end up loving your godmother more than your own mom?"
Jasper let out a couple of baby babbles, snuggling into her.
Catherine laughed. "No matter how much time I spend with him, he's always going to love his mom the most."
"I'm not saying I don't want him to be close to you. Honestly, I'd love it if he only wanted you. That way, you could stay home with him, and I could go out to make money and have fun."
Lorinda only really doted on Jasper when he was being sweet. The second he started fussing, her patience wore thin.
