Amanda had pulled this kind of trick so many times, Catherine had lost count.
Patty snapped out of her daze and started chomping on her apple, big bites and all.
“Come outside. I need to talk to you.”
Catherine’s eyes were clear as glass, but there was a layer of anger just underneath. Her stare hit Amanda hard, making her heart thump in her chest.
Catherine slipped out of the hospital room first and waited at the end of the hallway. It took Amanda a while to step out and join her.
“What’s so secret that you couldn’t say it in front of Patty? I don’t like leaving her alone.”
Amanda sounded like she was complaining, but her voice shook just a little. Underneath, she was anxious. Guilty, even. She knew she’d done something wrong.
Catherine didn’t bother with small talk. She handed Amanda a manila envelope, not even glancing her way.
“Give me an explanation.”
“An explanation for what?” Amanda didn’t take the envelope. She pushed it right back. “If you’ve got something to say, just say it.”
Catherine let her arm drop. She stared at Amanda, her expression cold.
“Either you look at what’s inside and explain, or I’ll take this straight to the police.”
“Hey, wait—”
Amanda’s eyes went wide as she snatched the envelope. She opened it, took one look at the contents, and her breath caught. Her guilt was written all over her face.
