Amanda burst out of the room, not watching where she was going, and ran straight into Catherine. If Lorinda hadn’t been standing on Catherine’s other side, Catherine would have been thrown right into the wall.
“What is wrong with you?” Lorinda caught Catherine just in time, her voice rising. “Why are you in such a rush? Did you do something you shouldn’t have?”
Amanda fumbled, shoving her phone deep into her pocket. “I... I thought the doctor was calling. I didn’t want to miss it.”
With Lorinda’s help, Catherine steadied herself, her face clouding over. “They already admitted her. What did the doctor say? When’s the surgery? Is it scheduled?”
The questions came one after another, making Amanda’s nerves fray even more. She bent down to pull the blanket up over Patty. “I don’t know yet. We’re still waiting to hear back from the doctor. And it’s not like we’ve paid yet. We’re still short two hundred thousand for the surgery.”
“Two hundred thousand?” Lorinda’s voice shot up. “That’s way more than we were told before. Why did it go up so much?”
Amanda had just tucked Patty in when the little girl pushed the blanket off and grumbled, “It’s hot.”
Amanda shot her a sharp look, her words coming out harsh. “Well, it’s because she’s so young. The doctor says surgery on kids is harder and riskier. They need a top specialist for her. You two are the ones insisting on saving her. Her life comes at a price...”
“Enough,” Lorinda snapped. “It’s not even your money, so stop talking.”
Amanda opened her mouth, then clamped it shut, falling silent.
Catherine walked over to the bed and met Patty’s big, dark eyes. Maybe Patty was just too little to understand what all this life and death talk meant. Her eyes were clear and bright, brimming with energy.
Amanda mumbled something about needing to check on something and slipped out, acting all mysterious.
Catherine and Lorinda stayed with Patty, playing quietly for a while.
“Catherine, Lorinda, does my illness cost a lot of money?” Patty asked, blinking up at them.
