Fiona settled into the chair, her feet swinging above the floor as the wicker seat rocked beneath her.
“So, what’s your plan for Catherine?”
Lance took a seat on a short stool, his long legs parted, elbows resting on his knees. “If you’ve got something to say, just say it.”
Fiona wasn’t here to discuss Catherine’s future just to hear Lance’s ideas. She already knew whatever he planned wouldn’t be what she wanted.
“You two were married. That counts for something, doesn’t it? This whole mess started with Adelina, and Catherine ended up getting hurt. You owe her, at least a little.”
Lance set his wine glass aside, fingers interlaced, waiting for Fiona to go on.
She paused, choosing her words. “Why not use this chance to help her marry into the Main family?”
Her words landed hard, ringing in Lance’s ears.
He felt a prick of irritation and his eyes narrowed. “What did you just say?”
“Even if Catherine and Gavin aren’t officially together, there’s definitely something between them.” Fiona left out the pregnancy, not because she didn’t trust Lance, but because she didn’t think it mattered right now.
Catherine and Gavin? Really?
Lance’s gaze sharpened. “Who told you that?”
“Doesn’t matter. Just help her out. Gavin might not be perfect, but the Main family has money and status. With us supporting her, Catherine would be fine there. She wouldn’t be bullied.”
At this point, Fiona only had two wishes left. One, to see Lance married. Two, to see Catherine settled happily. Okay, make that three—she wanted Sophia to find a good match too. Three wishes, that was it.
“I’ve heard of brothers protecting their sisters, husbands looking out for their wives. But I’ve never heard of an ex-husband stepping in for his ex-wife,” Lance said, his voice low and cool, like the air in late autumn.
Fiona studied him for a moment. “When have you ever treated Catherine like an ex-wife?”
Lance didn’t answer. If he had, none of this would be happening.
The first summer rain came quickly, pounding against the windows.
Fiona rose from the chair and started back inside. “Honestly, if you two hadn’t divorced out of nowhere, none of this would be happening...”
