Adelina looked pale, her eyes rimmed red. The blue and white stripes of her hospital gown made her seem even more fragile and small.
Lance sat at the foot of the bed on the sofa, legs crossed, newspaper in hand. When someone knocked, both of them turned toward the door.
Catherine stepped in, taking everything in with a quick glance. She paused for a few seconds, then quietly closed the door behind her.
“Lance.” Her voice was steady, but her brow furrowed a little. She still didn’t get why Lance wanted to meet in Adelina’s hospital room, of all places.
“Sit,” Lance said, gesturing to the armchair next to him.
Catherine hesitated before sitting down and setting the fruit basket beside her. She and Lance sat side by side, both looking at Adelina, who was sitting alone on the bed.
Adelina looked even paler, if that was possible.
Catherine barely glanced at her before turning back to Lance. “Lance, about my resignation—”
“Hold on.” Lance put the newspaper aside and rested his hand on the armrest, tapping his fingers in a slow, steady rhythm.
The room felt tense, like everyone was waiting for something to happen.
Catherine pressed her lips together. She had no idea what was going on, so she just sat there in silence.
Suddenly Adelina’s shaky voice broke through. “Catherine, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have spread those rumors about you and Gavin. I ruined your reputation, messed up your job. Can you forgive me?”
In that video, no one could hear what Lance and Adelina were saying out on the balcony. Catherine had always thought things got so messy because Adelina brought trouble to Lance. She never expected Adelina to apologize to her.
She looked at Lance, surprise clear in her eyes.
“You don’t have to forgive her if you don’t want to,” Lance said, getting up from his seat. He straightened his pants, looking sharp and in control.
He walked to the door. “We’ll talk about everything else at the office.”
He’d only asked Catherine to come because Adelina was still in the hospital, so the apology had to happen here.
