The tears Catherine had been holding in for days finally slipped down her cheeks.
“I take back what I just said!”
Lorinda pulled her into a hug, laughing. “Your baby’s a fighter. He’s always been fine. You don’t owe the universe anything for his safety. Even if you didn’t take your words back, nothing bad would happen.”
A real smile broke through on Catherine’s face, warm and honest.
“Okay, you haven’t been eating well for days. I’ll ask the nanny to cook extra tonight. You’re staying for dinner before you head out, got it? You need to get your strength back. And don’t rush back to work. My livestream is finally back on track, and I just opened a new account for Jasper’s videos. The followers are coming in fast.”
This whole ordeal made something obvious to Lorinda.
That baby was Catherine’s whole world.
“No matter when the truth about your pregnancy gets out, no one’s going to guess the baby belongs to Lance. But once the baby’s born, if he ends up looking like Lance, that’s another story. So just keep working until you’re almost due, then resign. I’ll take care of you. After everything is settled and you recover, you can go back to work.”
Catherine had been thinking about this too.
The bonus from the government contract would help with her finances for a while.
“Lorinda, really, thank you.”
Lorinda just clicked her tongue. “When I started out online, I wasn’t making a cent. You supported me for months and I never even said thank you. And now you’re thanking me? What, you don’t see me as family?”
Catherine placed a hand gently on her belly. Her whole body finally relaxed as she curled up on the sofa, a small smile tugging at her lips.
“When I was pregnant and giving birth, you were the one running around, signing all my forms. You’re my emergency contact, you know.”
Lorinda, holding Jasper, pinched his chubby little cheek. “A godmother is just like a real mom, isn’t she, sweetheart? All these clothes, bottles, and formula—godmommy bought them all for you…”
