Catherine suddenly perked up. “Wait, don’t they have IV catheters here?”
Patty shook her head, looking a bit lost. She was too little to really know what that meant.
Catherine tucked Patty’s coat in tighter, making sure she was bundled up. “I’ll ask the nurse later, see if that’s something you can get.”
Patty hesitated. “Amanda told me not to talk to any of the nurses. She said if I have questions, I should tell her and she’ll talk to the doctor for me.”
Catherine tried to reassure her, smiling gently. “It’s totally normal to ask the doctor about your illness, but for little things like this, you can just ask the nurse.”
But Patty shook her head again. “No, Amanda really doesn’t want me talking to the nurses at all. And even when we go outside, I’m not allowed to chat with the other kids either.”
Catherine blinked, surprised. “Why not?”
Patty looked down, voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know. The other day, I snuck into the next room to play. There’s a girl there who’s sick too, but she doesn’t have to get shots every day like me.”
Catherine felt a pang of worry, but tried to calm Patty first. “You can’t go sneaking around like that, okay? It’s not safe. Promise me you won’t do it again?”
Patty nodded. “Okay.”
Catherine thought for a moment. “Anything else you want to tell me?”
Patty’s big dark eyes blinked, then sparkled with a sudden memory. “The other day Mr. Main came by again. I overheard him talking to Amanda. They said something about… getting caught…”
“Catherine!”
Amanda’s voice cut through the air, sharp and sudden.
Catherine looked up.
Amanda was striding toward them, holding what looked like a lab report in her hand, her face dark with anger.
“Patty, go back to your room right now!”
Patty jumped at her tone and hurried off without looking back.
Catherine snatched the report from Amanda, her own expression turning icy. “Did you go through my bag? Do you even realize that’s a complete violation of privacy?”
Amanda looked defiant, her voice rising. “So what if I did? What, are you going to call the police? Go ahead, then you can take care of all the kids at the orphanage yourself!”
