“A meal isn’t enough to repay your kindness, but it’s only right. When you’re not so busy, please let me know.”
Lewis always did things properly. He was the sort of person who took etiquette seriously.
Catherine didn’t text back. She set her phone aside and crawled into bed. The exhaustion hit her all at once, and before she knew it, she was fast asleep.
The next few days blurred together as she ran herself ragged between the seventeenth floor and the top floor. She was busy to the point her feet hardly touched the ground. This time, though, it wasn’t Lance making things hard for her. It was just work, plain and simple.
Three days slipped by without her catching so much as a glimpse of Lance. For every meeting, she’d have Aaron bring a recorder. Afterward, she’d organize the notes and send a summary to Lance’s inbox. If there was a dinner, Aaron was the one who went with him.
One afternoon, on her way upstairs to find Aaron, Michelle stopped her in the hall.
“Catherine, I heard from Lewis that you helped his mom find a doctor?”
Catherine nodded. “Yeah, I just happened to know someone.”
Michelle’s relief was obvious. “I’ve got no connections at all and kept hitting brick walls. You really came through for us. Lewis wanted me to ask when you’d be free to grab a meal with him.”
“Don’t worry about it, really. I’m swamped. You’ve seen how it is.” Everyone in the office could see Catherine running all over the place every day.
Michelle jumped in before Catherine could say more. “Tomorrow, the whole top-floor team is doing a group outing at the resort outside the city. Everyone’s free to do whatever. I’ll have Lewis swing by.”
“No, that’s—”
“That’s settled, then. I’ll call him now.” Michelle didn’t give her a chance to protest, already pulling out her phone as she walked away.
Catherine thought about chasing after her, but just then, Lance stepped out of his office. His familiar scent drifted over, stopping her in her tracks.
