But now, it was all happening right in front of him, and he just pretended not to see.
All because the one doing the bullying was Adelina.
He made excuses for her, letting her get away with anything.
By the time Catherine got to the first hotel, it was already ten thirty at night. She called Shirley on video, and Shirley wasted no time bossing her around, making her film everything from the wedding hall to the street outside.
“Alright, next hotel,” Shirley said, barely paying attention, clearly just making things difficult for her.
Catherine grabbed another cab to the next hotel. The whole way there, news about Lance and Adelina’s engagement kept popping up all over the trending feeds. She couldn’t help herself—she tapped into one story after another. The way every post described their romance, dripping with luxury and fairy-tale sweetness, made her eyes sting.
Her heart felt like it was being squeezed.
Even in the taxi, the radio wouldn’t stop talking about Lance and Adelina’s engagement.
Catherine leaned her head against the window. The night air slipped in through a crack, cool on her forehead but doing nothing to settle her swirling thoughts.
She checked out two more hotels. By the time she arrived at the third one, it was past three in the morning.
Before she could give up from exhaustion, Shirley did—Catherine’s calls went unanswered, twice in a row.
Left with nothing else to do, Catherine sank into a sofa in the hotel lounge and tried to rest.
Somewhere along the way, she curled up and drifted off.
When she opened her eyes again, daylight was streaming in.
Catherine jumped up quickly, but her legs buckled and she almost fell.
A strong, steady hand caught her just in time.
She instinctively grabbed the person’s wrist, her gaze following the solid arm up to—
Gavin’s smiling face.
“Gavin?” Catherine let go right away and straightened up.
“Why do you look so shocked?” Gavin let go too and dropped into an armchair, grinning at her. “Weren’t you waiting here for me?”
Catherine smoothed out her clothes, pausing at his words. “Waiting for you?”
