The Abandoned Wife Dumped Him First (Victoria and Elias) novel Chapter 8

Victoria stared at her for a moment, stunned.

"What's wrong? Don't recognize me anymore, Designer Sanger?" Cerys slid her sunglasses back on and raised an eyebrow. "But seriously, you look like you've lost more weight. Fess up, have you been secretly dieting while I was away in Meridia these past two weeks?"

Listening to Cerys's teasing, Victoria felt a sudden sting in her eyes.

"...Cerys."

They were best friends, the kind who'd shared closets since they were kids. Cerys knew Victoria better than Victoria knew herself.

She heard the waver in her voice and knew instantly that something was wrong.

"Vic, what is it? Who hurt you?"

From the doorway, it had been hard to tell in the dim light of the office, but as Cerys got closer, she saw that Victoria's eyes were red and brimming with tears.

Victoria rarely cried.

Before she could ask again, Victoria spoke, "Cerys, Elias and I are getting a divorce."

Cerys's heart sank. "Vic, did that bastard Elias..."

"It was me," Victoria said, her lips tightening. After a brief pause, she added, "Cerys, I was the one who asked for it."

Cerys was speechless.

Others might not have known, but she had watched Victoria fall, slowly and deeply, in love.

Victoria's love for Elias was bone-deep, the kind of love she would die for.

So when she said she was the one who had asked for the divorce, Cerys's first reaction was disbelief.

But then she glanced down and saw that the wedding ring on Victoria's right ring finger was gone.

From the day she had put it on, Victoria had never taken that ring off.

"Vic, what the hell happened while I was gone?" Cerys asked.

Victoria looked down. "Cerys, I lost the baby..."

Her voice was soft and eerily calm, as if she were recounting something that had happened to someone else.

But Cerys knew that every word Victoria spoke was a knife she was dragging across her own heart, leaving it torn and bleeding.

"That son of a bitch! I'm going to go find him right now!" Cerys turned, ready to storm out.

"Cerys!"

"Don't stop me, Vic! I'm going to ask him what gives him the right to treat you like this! Yes, Mr. Sanger forced him to marry you, but if he loved Genevieve so much, he could have just said no, couldn't he? And besides, if it weren't for you five years ago, that bastard Elias would be dead!"
