Ignoring the pain, Victoria took the chance to wrench her hand free, stumbling and falling off the sofa.
She hadn't intended to bite her tongue off, but she was making a gamble—a desperate bet that such a drastic act would force Elias to let her go.
She knew all too well that once Elias set his mind on something, no one could stop him.
But she refused.
The night she was drunk had been an accident, one she'd willingly consented to because she loved him. Now, however, the last shred of pride she had as a Sanger wouldn't allow her to sink into debasement with Elias after she had already chosen to walk away from their relationship.
She knew he didn't love her.
He was only doing this to humiliate her. And she was not his toy.
Elias's face darkened to a thunderous black. "You're so determined to save yourself for some other man that you'd threaten me with your own life? Victoria, do you really think I give a damn about your life?"
Her tongue throbbed with pain. Victoria's face was pale, but she said nothing, her eyes filled with defiance.
Her silence did nothing to quell the fire raging in his chest. He grabbed her wrist, yanked her back onto the sofa, and pried open her tightly shut lips. The blood that seeped out stained her pearly teeth, a testament to her fierce resolve.
"Ugh—"
Victoria shoved Elias away, clutching her chest as a wave of nausea rolled through her stomach, making her gag.
It took a long moment for the feeling to subside.
Elias's eyes narrowed as he stared at her slender back. A thought seemed to strike him, and he asked coldly, "Are you pregnant?"
Victoria's back went rigid, her fingers curling into fists.
Seeing her silence, Elias's suspicion solidified. He pulled her around to face him. "We didn't use condoms that night. Are you...?"
"No!" Victoria squeezed her eyes shut, her voice trembling as she cut him off. "I'm not pregnant!"
Elias stared at her, as if trying to gauge whether she was lying. Finally, he stood up, his voice flat and emotionless. "Pregnant or not, a trip to the hospital will tell us the truth."
A sharp pain pierced Victoria's heart. She had been trying so hard to forget the baby, to forget that day, but every night, she dreamed of her child asking in a tiny voice why she hadn't protected them.
Going to the hospital would be like tearing open a wound that had just begun to scar over.
"I'm not going to the hospital," she said, her lashes trembling.
"It's not up to you," Elias warned, looking down at her. "Victoria, you'd better hope I don't find out you're lying to me."
"I have never lied to you!" Even knowing he wouldn't believe her, she straightened her spine and met his gaze directly. "Elias, I know whether I'm pregnant or not. Besides, I took a pill that morning after I woke up."
