The Imperial Crest Estates.
After Victoria moved out, Elias returned even less frequently. Usually, only Anne came by to clean.
The front door opened inward.
Anne had gone home for the day on personal business and had only just come back in the evening to finish tidying up. She was about to leave with a bag of trash when she heard the door and froze.
"Mr. Shawn…" Anne recognized the visitor and collected herself. "Mr. Shawn, you're back!"
Elias nodded in acknowledgment. The corner of his eye caught a piece of scrap paper that had fallen out of the bag. A pencil sketch on it immediately drew his attention.
Noticing his gaze, Anne explained, "Mr. Shawn, these are some sketch papers and notebooks that Mrs.—that Miss Sanger left behind. They were missed during the last cleanup."
Suddenly, Anne remembered the last time she had called to ask what to do with Victoria's things. Elias had coldly snapped, "Throw it all out! Don't leave a single thing!"
She quickly added, "Mr. Shawn, I'll go throw them out right now."
Elias's eyes were heavy. "Leave them."
Anne, who had already taken half a step out the door, stopped in her tracks, a flicker of surprise and confusion on her face. Seeing Elias already walking toward the living room, she didn't press the issue. She took a few steps forward, gently placed the bag on the coffee table, and said, "Oh, alright… I'll go make you some soup for your hangover."
Anne had smelled the alcohol on him the moment he walked in. She was about to turn toward the kitchen.
"No need, Anne. You can go home," Elias said.
Anne glanced at the gauze on Elias's right hand. She opened her mouth to say something, but then thought of his unyielding nature, swallowed her words, and simply said, "Yes, sir," before leaving.
A moment later, the sound of the front door closing echoed through the house.
Now, Elias was the only one left in the vast estate.
He leaned back, slowly closing his eyes. His temples throbbed painfully.
The aftereffects of the red wine were strong. He hadn't felt it much on the way back, but now that he was sitting down, he was hit with a dizzying wave of intoxication.
He had a high tolerance for alcohol and was naturally guarded. He rarely got drunk unless he wanted to.
The last time he had been drunk was eight months ago, the night he and Victoria had slept together.
That day, Genevieve's divorce from Henry had been finalized. The court had declared her single.
