Victoria cried until she was breathless, her emotions finally settling. The front of Elias's shirt was soaked through.
A few moments later, Elias's phone rang. It was Hawk, reporting that Grady had been settled into a room in the special care unit, right next to Garnett's.
Victoria was still in Elias's arms. As she started to pull away, she overheard the name 'Grady' from the phone. Her lips tightened. She looked up at Elias, her voice hoarse from crying. When he ended the call, she opened her mouth, desperate to ask if Grady had arrived.
Elias looked down and met her tear-filled eyes. The corners were still red and moist, giving her a pitiable look that sparked an impulse to kiss her.
A lump formed in Elias's throat. He clenched his right hand, and a sharp jolt of pain shot through his nerves, forcibly suppressing the thought.
He knew what she wanted to ask. His gaze was deep. "Your brother's room is next to your father's."
Victoria understood immediately. She turned and headed for the elevator. Elias followed, watching as she broke into a jog, and then a full run, disappearing inside.
Genevieve's room was only two floors below the special care unit. But as Victoria stared at the floor indicator on the LCD screen, those two floors felt like an eternity.
Ding!
The elevator finally arrived.
The entire floor had only four rooms, all in the special care unit. They were arranged symmetrically, two at each end of the hall, to ensure patient privacy and a quiet environment. Garnett's and Grady's rooms were at the far end of the corridor.
