Elias's voice was low as he replied with a simple, "I'm going to a groundbreaking ceremony. There's a celebration dinner tonight, so you don't need to prepare dinner for me."
Groundbreaking ceremony...
Victoria suddenly recalled something Sunny had mentioned a few days ago, and she knew exactly which ceremony Elias was talking about.
The groundbreaking for The Carolus Tower, the building Genevieve had designed. Elias was attending to support her.
In the next instant, a sharp, twisting pain shot through her stomach, and she let out a muffled groan.
"Mrs. Shawn, are you alright? You look terribly pale!"
Victoria bit her lower lip, the pain making it hard to speak.
Seeing this, Elias's eyes narrowed and he was about to step forward when his phone rang.
He glanced at the caller ID, then back at Victoria, and answered.
"Elias, the ceremony starts at three. Are you on your way?" Genevieve's soft, gentle voice came through the phone.
"Gen..."
"Elias, is something holding you up? It's okay, I can wait for you. As long as you can make it, that's all that matters." Genevieve sensed his hesitation and quickly cut in, putting on a show of being the understanding one.
"Elias, I'm so happy you agreed to come. I never told you, but the inspiration for this building was our baby. I was hoping it would be finished by the time the baby is born."
At the same time, Victoria managed to tell Anne she was fine, her voice reaching Elias's ears.
Elias's tone became firm. "Don't worry, I'll be on time."
He hung up, spared Victoria one last glance, and turned to leave.
"Sir!" Anne hurried after him. "Sir, Mrs. Shawn doesn't look well. Could you maybe—"
"Anne, didn't you hear her say she's fine?" Elias cut her off coldly.
Anne looked anxious. "She only says she's fine because she doesn't want us to worry. The doctor said with her condition, she could easily have stomach bleeding..."
"The doctor said to observe her for one night. Nothing happened last night. What, now that I'm leaving, she suddenly decides to have stomach bleeding?" Elias sneered. "Victoria, I didn't know you'd learned how to fake being sick!"
The front door slammed shut.
Elias was gone, without a backward glance.
Victoria leaned against the counter. Hearing his words, a faint, self-mocking smile touched her lips.
In Elias's eyes, everything she did was a lie, a carefully calculated move.
