"Elias!" Victoria struggled, but Elias had her pinned with all four limbs, holding her like a doll.
Again and again. She couldn't help but feel a surge of irritation.
She never should have felt a pang of pity when she saw the injury on his wrist and brought him a blanket.
Elias didn't respond, but he didn't let go either.
The sofa was too small to fit two people lying down. Even though he was holding her, she felt like she could fall off at any moment.
Unable to break free, Victoria gave up and tried to reason with him. "Elias, I'm not comfortable like this. Could you..."
Before she could finish, the man suddenly tightened his arms around her waist, rolled over, and pulled her to the inner side of the sofa.
"Shh. Just behave and be quiet," Elias's voice was husky, with the tone of someone coaxing a child.
Victoria's back was pressed against the sofa's backrest, her forehead against his chest. She had completely lost any room to move, and every breath she took was filled with his cool, woody scent.
She did, in fact, stop talking.
Because it was useless.
She remained in that position for what felt like an eternity until the sound of the man's steady, even breathing came from above her.
Victoria tilted her head up slightly. The movement was small, as she wanted to see if Elias was sound asleep but was afraid of waking him.
However, from her angle, all she could see was the sharp line of his jaw. Holding her neck at that angle quickly made it ache.
Victoria lowered her gaze, her eyes dimming.
It was so quiet that the only sound she could hear was the steady, powerful beat of Elias's heart—a rhythmic thumping that gradually lulled her to sleep.
-
The night passed without a dream.
When Victoria opened her eyes again, the sky was already bright.
She instinctively tried to sit up but felt a restraint. It took her a moment to realize where she was. Her heart skipped a beat as she looked up at the still-sleeping man.
