The woman looked embarrassed and pulled her hand back. "...Whatever. Fine, just comp the meal."
The manager, clearly used to this kind of thing, offered a placating smile. "I'm very sorry. As a personal apology, I'll give you two coupons as well. I hope you'll feel better."
The woman glanced at the coupons in the manager's hand, snorted, snatched them away, grabbed her bag, and stormed out of the burger joint.
As soon as the customer was gone, the manager's smile vanished. He frowned and scolded the employee, "What is wrong with you? I ask you to serve one table and you cause this much trouble!"
"I'm sorry, I..."
"The cost of that comped meal will be deducted from your salary this month," the manager interrupted impatiently. "And if this happens again, you can pack your things and get out!"
With that, the manager turned and went back to the front counter, leaving the employee to clean up the mess by herself.
"...Rose?" Sunny asked tentatively, standing behind the employee.
The employee, who was bent over cleaning, stiffened. She turned around, and when she saw Sunny and Victoria, her face went white. She instinctively reached into her pocket for a mask.
However, just as she pulled it out, she heard Sunny say, "It really is you. But... what are you doing here?"
Rose froze, her hands clenching into fists as a flash of resentment crossed her eyes.
Why was she here?
Just half a month ago, she was an architect everyone envied. She had a high-paying job, and after years of hard work in The Imperial Capital, she had finally bought a house and was enjoying the admiration of people from her hometown.
Now, because of the video Victoria had exposed, she had fallen from grace overnight. She had been fired and become a pariah in the industry. The resumes she sent out vanished without a trace, and the massive, looming mortgage payments were suffocating her, forcing her to lower her standards and take a job at a burger joint just to make ends meet.
They were the reason for her current predicament, so how dare they ask her that question!
"If you came here to laugh at me, you've had your fun. Now can you please get out of my way so I can work?"
Rose wanted to call them out for the hypocrites they were!
However, remembering the manager's warning, she could only bite her lip, put on her mask, and pick up the tray of leftover food, deliberately bumping past Victoria and Sunny.
Caught off guard by the shove, Sunny staggered back a couple of steps, grabbing a nearby chair to steady herself.
When she recovered, she was furious. She turned and pointed at Rose's back, about to yell, "Rose, you..."
Victoria pulled her back. "Let it go. Don't waste your anger on people like her."
"Victoria, you didn't see the way she was acting! It was her own fault she ended up like this, but she's acting like we owe her something!" Sunny said indignantly.
Victoria looked at her and suddenly thought she looked a bit like her cat, Dawn, when he was angry.
