Night fell.
Cerys carefully carried a cake from the refrigerator and placed it on the coffee table in the living room.
Victoria was sitting cross-legged on the sofa, gently brushing Dawn, who was purring in her lap.
When she saw Cerys bring out the cake, she recalled the last time Cerys had wailed over a melted cake.
"Didn't you say last time that you were never eating cake again?" she teased.
Cerys unwrapped a small fork and pulled the cake from its box. "You've finally escaped the daily grind and regained your freedom. Doesn't that deserve a little cake?" she said dismissively.
Victoria chuckled at her words.
Cerys cut a slice and handed it to her, then took a small piece for herself. As the cream melted in her mouth, she chewed on her fork and mumbled, "There's just one thing I regret!"
Victoria watched Dawn kneading her lap for attention and dabbed a bit of cream on her finger for the cat to lick. Hearing Cerys, she made a questioning sound.
Cerys's tone turned indignant. "That bitch Genevieve didn't actually end up in jail!"
Victoria had submitted her resignation that morning, and Genevieve had been released by the economic crimes unit that afternoon.
"I really don't know what those investigators in the capital were doing. They looked into it for days, and the final conclusion is that Genevieve had nothing to do with Vista Heights Lodge?" The more Cerys spoke, the angrier she got, nearly biting through her fork.
Victoria stroked Dawn's head, her expression darkening slightly, but she remained silent.
She wasn't actually surprised that Genevieve had gotten away unscathed.
If Genevieve were the type to be easily caught, she wouldn't have had the audacity to taunt her at Grady's funeral, admitting she'd killed him.
After finishing a whole slice of cake, Victoria felt a wave of exhaustion.
In the days since returning from Rivertown, she hadn't been sleeping well. She either had insomnia and needed melatonin to fall asleep, or she would dream of Grady and Tamara.
"Cerys, I'm going to head to bed."
Cerys was still fuming, busy texting Lucian Thorne to complain about the investigators' incompetence. Hearing Victoria say she was going to rest, she paused for a moment before following Victoria to her bedroom door. "Victoria, there's something… I wanted to talk to you about."
Victoria sat on the edge of her bed and looked at her, confused.
Cerys bit her lip. "It's about my aunt… She's been abroad for over two weeks, and I can't get in touch with her. You know how pessimistic she can be. She just got divorced, and I'm worried something might happen if she's left to travel alone."
If it hadn't been for Grady's sudden death, Cerys would have still been accompanying her recently divorced aunt on a trip around the world.
