"Your one million," Alex replied calmly.
Startled, Jane backed off. "I... I didn't ask you for money. I... I won't ask for a penny from you, don't worry."
"Didn't you say so yourself, that you've worked for almost eight years as a maid at my house? A maid should be paid every month and one million shouldn't be too much for the past seven years."
"Take it, you've earned this."
Jane still refused to take the card.
"I'm Alex Poole, I can't have people thinking that I am someone who would owe a maid her salary despite m y enormous wealth, so just take it."
With that, Jane finally accepted the card hesitantly. But then, he pulled out another card and presented it t o her. Both Jane and Noah were confused. She gazed u p at him and asked, "Wh-why are... you giving me another?"
"Alimony."
"You said so yourself. You have always been the one who took protection and I've never done so. I am the
one to blame for your pregnancy and for how damaged your body is right now. It's my child in your belly and when you give birth to it, I have legal obligations to it as well, don’t I?
"I... I told you, I won't blackmail you with my child. I will never use my child as leverage.
pregnant women tend to be a bit paranoid."
Alex did not say a word, but simply nodded.
"I... I was so rude just now for screaming and crying at you. The things I said to you just now... I don't mean for them to sound resentful. We... We are both consenting adults, and everything I've done for you in the past seven years was done so at my own will. I've never wanted to ask anything of you. I mean it, Mr. Poole. It's my fault just now... I shouldn't complain like that," she said.
Alex watched as the woman who was just picking up leftovers off the ground a few moments ago, returned t o her past elegant, graceful, and gentle self despite her ragged looks, and he was immediately overwhelmed b y emotions. Perhaps this was what it meant to be a mother. She was pregnant with a child inside of her, and that had caused her to become stronger without her realizing it. She might seem pitiful on the outside, living at the very bottom of the society, but her eagerness to survive and her strength to crawl her way out of all the suffering had only grown stronger, t o the point that she would pick leftovers off the ground only to survive.
For some reason, tears began to gather in Alex's eyes. He was suddenly reminded of his own words when he said Sebastian was turning soft just little over an hour ago, and Sebastian said to him, "Alex, Sabrina is pregnant again. I'm a father of three now." 'Ah, yes. Fatherhood would turn a man as merciless as Sebastian soft; so, why wouldn't it do the same to me?' he thought.
