Pale and slender fingers drew out a white outer robe and draped it over her body while Ye Shaohua fixed the belt around herself.
She glanced sideways at Duan Yunxiu, "Is Yang Ziji in a hurry?"
Her voice was clear and somewhat deep.
Heard in the ears, it was like the gentlest enchantment.
Though the robe was snow-white, which should look as cold as a lotus on Snow Mountain, Duan Yunxiu couldn’t understand why he felt the air around them grow somewhat hot and dry.
"It’s nothing," Duan Yunxiu gave her a glance, then sighed, "Not in a hurry, we’ll wait for you outside the Palace Gate."
He left, taking the door with him.
Ye Shaohua had already put on her outer robe, but did not leave. Instead, she looked towards the curtain behind the door.
"Empress Dowager, please come out," she sighed.
The Empress Dowager’s face was a mix of emotions as she emerged from behind the curtain, followed by someone holding a cup of wine in hand.
Ye Shaohua silently lowered her jaw, beginning to suspect if this could be the legendary "crimson snow"
"Ye Aiqing, I know you are young and talented," the Empress Dowager looked at her, full of sighs, "I had truly admired you and even intended to match you with the emperor’s daughter, but it was stopped by the emperor. I thought he just disliked you..."
"But now I realize it wasn’t for the benefit of Lin’an. His preventing you from marrying Lin’an had other intentions," the Empress Dowager shook her head, "The emperor is already twenty-eight, and yet the harem remains empty. Ye Aiqing, it’s okay since you’re a girl, but you just had to be... I can’t bear to let you go either, but you wouldn’t want to bear the name of a treacherous official for all eternity, would you? I also don’t wish for the emperor to become a notorious ruler."
Ye Shaohua looked at the Empress Dowager and was silent for a moment.
"I’m sorry." That was all she said, not just because of the Empress Dowager’s poisoned wine, but because the system notified her that time was up.
She gently closed her eyes and drank the cup of poisoned wine.
Meanwhile, at the Palace Gate, Yang Ziji was outside.
He looked at Duan Yunxiu strangely, "So you just went in, and didn’t see anything?"
"What could I have seen?" Duan Yunxiu looked at him faintly.
Seeing his reaction, Yang Ziji had a guess.
"Why hasn’t Shaohua come out yet?" Yang Ziji was getting impatient, "I’ll go in and check. Your Majesty, will you come?"
Duan Yunxiu thought about the scene just now and shook his head, "No need, go call the Minister over. I’ll wait here."
The relationship between the sovereign and his ministers, having been established over a long time, had nearly become like that of friends.
There was almost no regard for the etiquette between a ruler and his subjects anymore.
Yang Ziji nodded and went straight in.
"Shaohua, why aren’t you ready yet?" Unlike Duan Yunxiu, Yang Ziji had always knocked on Ye Shaohua’s door before entering for the past two years.
Duan Yunxiu must be going mad, right?
**
"Shaohua, Xiaoya has a congenital heart disease, and her mother just passed away not long ago, could you please not get angry with her for no reason?" Ye Shaohua only heard a soft sigh beside her ear, "It’s not easy for mom either."
Ye Shaohua woke up again, hearing a voice.
Ye Shaohua hadn’t yet received her memories, but guessed that the person speaking was probably the original owner’s mother.
Nevertheless, Ye Shaohua only gave her a look; having just come from ancient times, her emotions weren’t yet steady, and she didn’t feel much like talking.
And this mother of the original owner... just by the tone, something seemed off.
Seeing the woman’s stubborn expression made her angry, "Why don’t you listen when I speak? Do you know how many women want to marry CEO Xu? With your background, marrying him is like your Ancestral Grave getting warm, using up eight generations’ worth of luck! You’re married to him yet you’re not content, always causing trouble. Listen to your mother, it’s for your own good, go back and live well with CEO Xu."
She hadn’t fully grasped the plot yet, but Ye Shaohua could roughly understand some things.
Just then, two more people returned outside the main door.
Leading them was a woman in her twenties, with a man who bore some resemblance to her by her side, likely siblings.
"Shaohua, you go ahead and leave," the woman stood up immediately when she saw them, urging Ye Shaohua to depart.
Seeing that Ye Shaohua made no move, she frowned, "I know you dislike your step-sister and step-brother, but look at yourself. A girl from the countryside, settling in the city and even marrying CEO Xu – wasn’t it all thanks to their family? Listen to me and leave. Don’t argue with them anymore; mom is caught in the middle, and it’s not easy for me."
When the young woman saw Ye Shaohua, she scoffed, "You actually have the nerve to come back? Don’t you know you’ve already been shamed online? Your fiancé broke off the engagement on the day itself and went abroad to find true love. Tsk, if I were you, I wouldn’t have the face to show myself on the street..."
