Quiana hesitated, clearly unhappy. “Lester, I trained for this race for a long time. I don’t think I’m worse than Loyce. Let me drive.”
One of the teammates shook his head. “Better to let Loyce handle it. She reacts faster to surprises on the course. And tonight they’re using the most dangerous mountain road. We’re worried about you.”
Lester nodded. “Exactly. It’s too risky. I don’t want you hurt. Loyce will run it. Your final leg is where the glory is anyway.”
Quiana didn’t actually want the danger. She put on a regretful look and nodded obediently. “I’m fine either way. Whatever you decide, Lester.”
Lester patted her head. “I’ll go get Loyce checked in.”
Hugo was about to call out “Loyce” when Lester shoulder-checked him. Hugo’s brows jumped. “Seriously? You’re feeling bold tonight.”
Lester shot him a glance. “Against the forever runner-up? Yeah, I’m allowed to be bold.”
Hugo’s mouth curled. “Careful. Don’t say it too early.”
Lester ignored him and stepped in front of Loyce, blocking her path. “Didn’t you say you weren’t coming? And yet, here you are.”
Loyce looked at him flatly. “What’s it to you?”
