She Was the Treasure All Along novel Chapter 373

Resting in Lucian’s strong, warm embrace, Loyce felt his steady heartbeat through his combat uniform, and the tension finally drained from her body. Exhaustion washed over her like a tide. She closed her eyes and whispered, “It’s not your fault. You have nothing to be sorry for.”

Lucian’s steps faltered for a fraction of a second as he carried her toward a safer clearing. He looked down at the tired but still stubborn girl in his arms. “I didn’t get here in time.”

“It wasn’t your fault. And you did get here in time,” Loyce said, opening her eyes to look up at him. “I told the surveillance room to notify you there were bears in the mountains, but they thought I was joking. They’re the ones at fault. If I hadn’t dealt with those bears today, who knows how many students would have died? You would have been blamed, and as the temporary instructor for the Ace Class, I would have shared that responsibility.”

“Lucian,” Loyce murmured against his chest, “the person in the military trying to harm you is probably the same one Gavin Quinn mentioned. Their connections run deep, and they’ll be hard to trace.”

“I know,” Lucian said, continuing down the mountain. “First things first, we need to get your injuries treated.”

Before long, Robert found Cyrilla, who had run off in a panic, and brought her down the mountain. She was trembling so badly that Robert had no choice but to carry her over his shoulder.

The military suppressed the news of the bear attack. The students, unaware of the terrifying incident, were simply told the activity was temporarily suspended and ordered to wait in their tents back at Yavon Manor. Fortunately, the military’s contingency plan was well-prepared, and another group of officers took over, teaching the students wilderness survival skills.

Yavon Manor had an infirmary, and Lucian had brought several military medics with him. However, Marnie’s lacerations were far too severe for the infirmary’s equipment. The medics could only stabilize her before sending her directly to the nearest branch of the military hospital. Cyrilla, also injured, was taken in the same ambulance.

Inside, as the medics worked to stop Marnie’s bleeding, one of them hissed, “How did this girl get so badly hurt? Did the bear catch her and claw her? Even if she pulls through, she’s going to have some nasty scars.”
