“I’ve run tests,” Loyce said. “There are no issues.”
“Here on our turf, the machine may be fine,” Zeke mused, a sharp glint in his eyes. “But back at the base, it’s a different story. Lucian, I heard that Caden is now working with Gavin. The Army Commander, Meredith, is also involved. Heh. It looks like they’re teaming up to push you out.”
“I was aware,” Lucian said calmly. “The moment I learned Jasmine was on her way, I called the Secretary of Defense. He’s bringing an independent team of specialists to the base to verify the system’s performance.”
Zeke’s worry finally eased. “Good. With his oversight, I can rest easy. You two should get going.”
…
News of Lucian taking on the entire naval command over a college student and the medical system had spread like wildfire. So when he arrived back at the naval base, escorted by the army, a large crowd was already gathered in the ship’s medical bay, waiting.
Gavin greeted Lucian with a placid smile, though his eyes darted to Loyce for a fraction of a second. As he saw the machine brought in under a cloth, alongside a pile of broken parts, his first reaction was a wave of relief.
“I was actually very keen for Admiral Shapiro to study our medical system,” he said smoothly. “Unfortunately, my family felt the Admiral was treating our hard work and dedication with contempt. They insisted I retrieve the machine at once.”
Meredith, standing nearby, glanced at the covered device. “It seems the upgrade was a failure. You can’t expect success when you treat serious matters like a child’s game.”
Behind Lucian, Robert and the other soldiers tensed at the insult, their expressions darkening.
“We’ll know whether it was a success or failure once we test it,” Lucian said, giving a slight nod.
When the cover was pulled away, a collective gasp went through the medical bay. The casing of the modified device was covered in strange, intricate patterns. The simple control panel had been replaced by a holographic projection interface, and the overall design was at least three times more complex than the original.
“Is that still a medical machine?” a naval doctor murmured. “It actually looks pretty impressive.”
