The girl was silent for a moment, convinced that Loyce was being sincere. She took off her backpack and pulled out the problem sets and homework Hallie had assigned that day. “I’m not very smart. I didn’t really understand what Hallie was teaching.”
Loyce took the papers, recognized the problem from the whiteboard that afternoon, and asked for a pen and a blank sheet. In just five minutes, she wrote out all four solutions. To make it easier for the girl to understand, she broke down every complex step into high-school level formulas the girl would recognize, methodically applying them one by one.
When she finished, she handed the paper back. “Take a look. Do you understand it now?”
The girl, who hadn’t held out much hope, glanced at the scratch paper. A few seconds later, her expression changed dramatically. The once-baffling solution process was now broken down into simple, comprehensible steps. Though still a bit challenging, she found herself actually understanding it, her face a picture of stunned realization. “You really are brilliant!”
Loyce smiled faintly. “You believe me now?”
“Why did Cyrilla say you couldn’t solve the Olympiad problem?” the girl asked, now thoroughly confused. “During dinner, she was whispering to Hallie that you always made her do worksheets on her own and used an AI problem-solver to teach her. She said she was having a hard time learning from you alone, which is why she found Hallie.”
“Who knows why she lies?” Loyce shrugged, completely unbothered.
The girl thought for a moment, then asked tentatively, “Do you like the herbal pudding?”
“It’s alright.”
Summoning her courage, the girl said, “Could you tutor me? My grades aren’t very good, and I really want to get into a good university. I can bring you my mom’s herbal pudding every day.”
Loyce disliked inviting trouble, but she accepted the offer anyway. “There’s no school tomorrow, right? Come to my lab in half an hour.”
The girl nodded. As Loyce was about to leave, she remembered to introduce herself. “My name is Giselle Turner.”
“Got it.”
...
Within half an hour, Loyce had finished her dinner and brought Giselle back to her lab.
Giselle was completely awestruck by the streams of green code flowing across multiple computer screens and the mechanical parts scattered across the tables.
