Loyce found herself surrounded by a few female soldiers and medics, who were peppering her with questions about how she and Lucian started dating. Jasmine sat nearby, pretending not to listen, but her ears were clearly pricked.
“Admiral Shapiro spends almost the entire year at sea,” one of the women asked. “And when he’s on land, he’s usually on base. How did you two even meet?”
Loyce glanced at Lucian’s back and replied casually, “We met at a hospital.”
Jasmine suddenly interjected, “Lucian has hardly ever stayed in a hospital. His condition is top secret, and he only sees private physicians. It’s highly unlikely you would have met him there.”
Loyce stuck to her story. “We met at a hospital.”
Jasmine was clearly skeptical. “With him being so busy, how did you two get together?”
“Love at first sight,” Loyce said without batting an eye.
“You fell for him?” Hazel asked.
Loyce smiled coolly, lying through her teeth. “He fell for me.”
The entire group fell silent.
Hazel was the first to break it, her voice filled with awe. “Wow, really? After all these years of being single, he falls in love at first sight. That’s quite a story. We all thought he’d dedicate his entire life to the country.”
Jasmine, sitting off to the side, squeezed her beer can so tightly that some of it spilled. She only snapped out of it when someone pointed it out, offering a quick, apologetic smile.
“Knowing Lucian as I have for so many years, I never would have thought he’d be the one to pursue someone,” she said softly. “Loyce, you must be quite extraordinary.”
“That’s true,” Loyce agreed readily. “I’m very smart!”
A muscle twitched in Jasmine’s jaw.
The barbecue was winding down, and Lucian timed his return to Loyce’s side perfectly. “It’s getting late. I’ll take you home,” he said.
Jasmine suddenly stood up and walked over to him. “I need to talk to you about something important. Come with me.”
“Official business doesn’t intrude on my personal time,” Lucian said coolly. “We can talk another day.”
“It’s about the command for the oil field conflict,” Jasmine insisted.
Lucian’s eyes narrowed. He heard Jasmine add, “It’s information from my father. I think you should take it seriously.”
