“You’re so engrossed,” Hazel whispered. “Can you actually understand that interface?”
“More or less,” Loyce replied. “It’s not that complicated.”
Hazel considered herself to have sharp eyes and a quick mind, but watching the medics operate such a complex system was still visually exhausting. Looking at Loyce’s earnest expression, she had a feeling she wasn’t lying. Did that mean she’d just inadvertently leaked classified information? Hazel decided to just pretend she hadn’t thought of it.
The drill lasted a full three hours. Loyce never moved from her spot, observing the entire medical procedure from start to finish. When it concluded, the medics regrouped, gave their reports, and were dismissed.
When Lucian arrived in the med-bay, Jasmine was just pulling off her gloves. Upon seeing him, she instinctively tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
Lucian strode into the med-bay, his military boots making a steady rhythm on the metal floor. His eyes immediately found Loyce in the corner, and seeing that she was unharmed, the tense line of his jaw relaxed slightly.
“Did the drill go smoothly?” he asked, his voice low as he paused at the entrance.
Jasmine answered before anyone else could. “Under my command, everything was executed according to plan. The casualty treatment success rate was one hundred percent.” She lifted her chin slightly, a hint of pride in her eyes.
Lucian nodded, but his gaze remained on Loyce. “What did you learn?”
The question was clearly directed at her.
Just as Loyce was about to speak, Jasmine interjected again. “Loyce was very quiet the whole time. I’m sure she learned a great deal.” She added pointedly, “But the medical system is far too complex to understand just by watching.”
Lucian’s sharp gaze shifted to Jasmine. “I was asking Loyce.”
The atmosphere in the bay instantly froze.
Jasmine’s face paled slightly, but she quickly regained her professional composure. “My apologies. I overstepped.”
