She Was the Treasure All Along novel Chapter 2

After walking out of the Sampson house, Loyce went straight to a nearby garage and swung onto her limited-edition motorcycle.

For years, she’d bent over backward for “family,” playing small in front of her brothers and hiding what she could really do. Now she could finally cut loose.

She rode hard, the engine screaming, until she stopped at the gate of a military housing compound.

Security was tight there. But the moment they saw her bike, the barrier lifted. A guard grinned and called out, “Hello, Ms. Sampson. Haven’t seen you around in a while.”

Loyce flipped up her visor and gave him a brief nod.

Inside the compound, flowering trees were in full bloom. A few retired officers were out walking. When they saw Loyce slow her bike, they headed over immediately.

“Loyce, you’re back! I was just about to look for you,” one of them said. “I finished the meds you mixed for me.”

Loyce parked, removed her helmet, and revealed sharp, delicate features. “I’ll be at the clinic here all day tomorrow. Come by and I’ll refill it.”

“And you,” she added, pointing at another older man’s neck brace. “I told you that thing will mess up your neck.”

The man flushed and took it off. “What if I go practice with my riding crop instead?”

“Try not to hit yourself,” Loyce said, and headed into the building.

She’d first ended up in this compound after a trip to the military general hospital to buy supplies. She’d happened to treat an older man having a severe seizure, wrote him a prescription on the spot, and fixed the underlying cause.

Only later had she learned who he was: a legendary clinician who’d retired from that same hospital. He’d praised her skill nonstop, even tried to take her on as his mentor, and practically forced an apartment on her inside the compound so she’d always have a place to stay.

The people here were easy to be around. The location was great. Over time, it had quietly become her home.
