At exactly noon, the cloth covering the rankings board was pulled away. The students instinctively parted, letting Loyce and the other two check their results first.
Keegan led Quiana straight to the very bottom of the list and started scanning upward.
When Quiana saw that the last name wasn’t Loyce’s, her heart leapt. “So she didn’t even make the list this time,” she thought, “probably turned in another blank test and got kicked off entirely.”
She tugged Keegan’s hand, signaling him to stop, then turned to Loyce with a soft, wounded look. “Loyce… you didn’t even land on the board this time. Just stop fighting me, okay?”
Keegan let out a mocking laugh. “Loyce, time to pay up.”
Loyce’s gaze flicked to the top of the first page. “Why don’t you go check the first page again?”
Keegan sneered. “So you’re really determined to grind what little pride you have left into dust.”
Just then, a wave of gasps erupted from the crowd packed around the top of the board.
“Oh my God! This is Loyce’s name! Loyce is number one!”
Someone shouted it, and as more voices repeated that Loyce had taken first place, Quiana’s expression snapped. “That’s impossible!”
She let go of Keegan and ran to the top of the list. Loyce’s name sat unmistakably in first. Quiana was tenth. And the gap between Loyce and second place was massive—she wasn’t just first, she was untouchably first.
“How is that possible?” Keegan rushed over, eyes wide, and blurted, “Loyce definitely cheated!”
Loyce lifted an eyebrow. “So if I get first, it automatically means I cheated?”
