Quiana shook off Keegan’s hand and hurried toward Loyce, her face full of panic and innocence. “Loyce! Don’t misunderstand! Keegan and I... It’s not what you think!”
She reached for Loyce’s hand, but Loyce dodged in disgust.
Loyce hadn’t even touched her, yet Quiana still twisted sideways and fell to the ground, crying out in pain. “Ah!”
Keegan’s face darkened instantly. He strode over, hauled Quiana up, and whipped his head around to glare at Loyce. His voice dripped with disgust and mockery. “Loyce, this is on me. I’m the one who fell for someone else. If you’re mad, take it out on me! Don’t bully Quiana!”
Loyce let out a cold laugh, her gaze sharp as a blade. “I bullied her? Keegan, are you blind? She fell on her own. How is that my problem?”
Quiana’s eyes brimmed with tears as she hurried to say, “Keegan, I really fell by myself. It’s not Loyce’s fault. Don’t talk to her like that.”
Keegan looked even angrier, trying—and failing—to hold it back. “Stop making excuses! Quiana’s kind. She’d never play games like that. You’re the one throwing your weight around, making things hard for her at every turn. You think you’re so high and mighty? You’re dead last in exams, you drag down research projects, you don’t have a single talent! Useless!”
Loyce didn’t rise to it. Her eyes held only contempt. “Right, right, Quiana’s better than me in every way. So why don’t you cancel our engagement? Why keep her as your secret all these years?”
Keegan was still her fiancé on paper. If he’d gotten involved with Quiana, why hadn’t he broken it off? Because an adopted daughter wouldn’t inherit the Sampson family’s fortune. Keegan had never planned to marry a beautiful nobody.
Keegan choked on the words, exposed and furious. “Watch your mouth! I never made her the other woman!”
