Natalia’s POV

Max! What were you thinking?

I couldn’t just stay home

You absolutely could have. That was literally the only thing I asked you to do.I grabbed his shoulder and turned him to face me fully. He was sweating already, we both were, and his face was flushed from the heat. Max. How did you even manage to follow me?

He looked at his feet. I climbed in the back of your car. Jumped out when you got to Bloodmoon, then I followed you on foot from there.

Oh, for the love of I cut myself off, pinching the bridge of my nose, and took a deep breath to calm myself. Okay. We have to get you back.

What?Max jerked his head up. What do you mean?

You can’t stay here,I said, turning. I looked around, then spotted the ruby sitting on the ground. It must have come through the portal with us. I rushed over, picking it up. We’ll redo the ritual. It should still work since we’re in the same location. I knew I never should have gone through with this-

No!

Give me my pack.I held my hand out. This isn’t up for debate.

Mom-

Now, Max.

He stared at me for a long moment. I thought he might obey, that he might realize just how bad this situation was.

But he didn’t.

As usual.

No.He took a step back. Dad is here. I can feel it. We’re close.

You don’t know that.

I do.He stuck his chin out. The same way Jane knows things. I’ve always been able to feel him, just a little bit, and right now I can feel him more than I ever have. He’s here, Mom. He’s really here.

I looked at him. He looked back at me.

Give me the pack,I said again, holding my hand out.

He shook his head.

I lunged for it.

What followed was not my proudest moment as a parent. Max was tast, and he twisted away from me and held the pack tip out of reach. I grabbed for the strap and got hold of it and yanked, and he yanked back. It went like that for a while

Max, give it

No-

So help me-

Chapter 563

Suddenly, the pack tore.

+25 Boni

The contents spilled out. The strap I was holding onto ripped away from the body. I’d had all my weight on it, so I fell backward: arms spinning out to the sides. I didn’t have a chance to catch myself.

I slammed into the ground with a grunt and a flash of pain up my spine. Beneath me, I felt something crunch.

We both froze.

No,I whispered, slowly pushing myself up. No, no, no, NO!

The ruby was shattered. It had been sitting on a small stone, and when my weight fell on it, the stone cracked it and it broke completely. It was in several pieces now, half of the symbols broken clean through.

Max’s face paled. Mom, I’mI’m sorry.
