Chapter 557
Natalia’s POV
I’d made good time through the Thornwood and past the mountain, stopping at Bloodmoon long enough to sleep one night and resupply. David had asked questions I didn’t really answer, and he’d let me leave anyway, which was the thing I loved most about my brother. He understood the familial need to get shit done first and think about it later.
Beyond the mountain, the terrain changed quickly. The trees thinned out and the ground got rocky and uneven. The wind came down off the peaks in cold, sharp gusts. By midday the sky had gone white indicating that snow was coming, and by late afternoon I was pulling my hood down against cold sleet.
I pushed on for another two hours before I accepted the situation and made camp.
I found a rock outcropping with a slight overhang, barely enough to keep the worst of the sleet off of my bedroll. I got a fire going with some effort, ate, and sat close to it with the map open on my knee, checking my position.
I was on track. Slower than I’d wanted, but on track.
I stayed up later than I should have, and I finally lay down and pulled the bedroll around me, I was tired enough that sleep came quickly.
But I hadn’t been asleep for long when a sound woke me up.
At first, the camp was quiet. The fire had burned down to coals. The sleet had stopped. The night was very still. I thought I’d just been dreaming.
I was just shutting my eyes again when I heard the sound of claws on rock above me.
I was on my feet and shifting before the mountain lion cleared the top of the rock.
It came down fast. I threw myself sideways and felt its claws catch the edge of my shoulder, which was a lot better than my head, where they were initially aimed. It hit the ground where I’d been a half second ago and spun quickly with a snarl.
In wolf form I had size and strength, but it had height on me when it reared up and the next swipe caught me across the flank hard enough to send me skidding across the frozen ground. I scrambled up and drove forward before it could lunge. I got under it and we went down in a tangle.
It was not a clean fight. I took multiple hits that made my wolf howl. My shoulder burned where it had caught me first and something on my left side had been raked deep enough that I could feel warm blood seeping through my fur.
I was starting to lose stamina when the clouds parted.
Out of nowhere, the moonlight spilled across the land like something had deliberately shone it down. The moment it hit me, t felt… different.
I didn’t have a word for what it felt like. Warmth? Strength?
It was over too quickly for me to put a name to it.
I moved. Lunged. Snapped. And the mountain lion went down in a heap on the ground.
Shifting back, I stood over it for a moment, panting. The cold air burned in and out and the blood on my side was dripping steadily, but it was already slowing the moonlight was still pooling around me.
I looked up at the sky and gasped softly. The sky had gone clear when it had been fully covered in clouds before. The moon was half–full yet far brighter than it should have been, and a single, shining beam of it was directed straight toward ine
“Did you do this?” I whispered.
There was no answer. Just a rustle of wind coming over the rocks
