Chapter 506
“We’re not running away. We’re giving him space to heal.”
“That’s stupid!” Tears welled up in his eyes. “You abandoned him!”
“Max, that’s not-”
“I don’t want to talk to you anymore.” He turned over, facing the wall. “Go away.”
“Max, please-”
“I said go away!”
I sat there for a moment, staring at him. He was trembling. wanted to pull him into my arms and make him understand. Make him see that this was the right choice. The only choice.
But he wouldn’t listen. Not right now.
I stood and walked to the door. “I love you, Max. Even when you’re angry at me.”
He didn’t respond.
I closed the door quietly and leaned against it. My chest felt like it was caving in. First Andrei, now Max. Everyone I loved was slipping away from me and I didn’t know how to stop it.
I went to bed that night feeling like the worst person in the world.
…
Andrei’s POV
It started the moment I closed my eyes.
I was back on the mountain of corpses. I tried not to look at their faces, but I couldn’t help it. My eyes wouldn’t shut, and my head wouldn’t turn.
Damon was near the top with his throat torn out. Grace was beside him, broken and bloodied. And there, at the very peak, were the twins. Jane and Max. Small and broken and staring at nothing.
“You failed.”
The voice was angry. Furious. It echoed through the mountain, making the bodies shift and slide. Goddess… The sound of those bodies slipping off one another was sickening.
“I told you to kill him. I gave you a simple task. And you failed.”
“I didn’t want to kill him,” I said. My own voice sounded weak. Pathetic.
“What you want is irrelevant. You are mine. You do as I command.”
“I won’t-”
Pain exploded through my skull before I could finish. I dropped to my knees, clutching my head. It felt like something was trying to claw its way out from the inside.
“You will learn,” the voice hissed. “You will learn obedience. You will learn your place.”
The pain intensified. I screamed, but no sound came out. The bodies around me started to move. Hands grabbed at me, pulling me down into the pile. I tried to fight them off, but there were too many.
They dragged me deeper. Deeper. Until I was buried beneath the weight of the dead.

“This is what happens when you disobey,” the voice said. “If you cannot deliver as my chosen one, then you will become one of them. A corpse to add to the mountain of corpses. Is that what you want? To be putrid? Rotten? Dismembered?”
The bodies pressed down on me from all sides, crushing me. I could feel their cold flesh against mine. Could smell their decay. I think I vomited, but I wasn’t even sure if that was possible. I was still dreaming, wasn’t I? This wasn’t real.
