Zhong Min cried for a while, but eventually tidied up and went to greet the guests.
Lin Zhiyi stayed with her until the evening.
Most of the guests left first, leaving close family in the living room to keep watch.
After sending Zhong Min back to her room to rest, Lin Zhiyi wearily descended the stairs.
She walked around but didn’t see Gong Chen anywhere.
Upon seeing her, Chen Jin pointed to the direction of the memorial hall in the courtyard.
"The Third Young Master went there and hasn’t come out since. You should go; I’ll look after Xingxing."
"Alright."
Lin Zhiyi went to the kitchen to get some food and then turned towards the memorial hall.
The Chinese-style memorial hall was filled with a solemn atmosphere.
Gong Chen had his back to the entrance, kneeling on the cushion, mechanically burning paper money in the brazier in front of him.
Lin Zhiyi slowly approached, and a gentle breeze from outside slightly lifted.
The rising flames flickered, illuminating his face.
The black pupils seemed to be burning everything.
"Third Young Master."
Gong Chen paused with his hand clutching the paper money but then let go.
The paper money fell into the brazier and quickly disappeared.
"I should hate him, yet just now, my mind was full of the times we spent together."
"Actually, even if he didn’t force my mother to conceive, with her character, she would have gotten pregnant. She wouldn’t abandon the Jiang Family."
"Even in death, she couldn’t stop worrying about the Jiang Family."
Lin Zhiyi set down the food and knelt on a mat beside him, reaching out to place her hand on Gong Chen’s shoulder.
Gong Chen turned his head, his eyes rimmed with red, flames flickering in his gaze.
Lin Zhiyi’s nose tingled, and she reached out to embrace Gong Chen.
"You’ve already done enough."
Gong Chen took a deep breath, spoke lowly, "How did he just die like that? Zhiyi, don’t leave me."
"Hmm."
Lin Zhiyi patted his back.
Elsewhere, at the Gong Family.
Old Mr. Gong sat in the tea room, listening to the butler report the situation.
"He’s dead?"
"Yes." The butler nodded.
"Haha, he’s finally dead. Decades later, it’s finally over."
The laughter echoed, but didn’t last long.
Old Mr. Gong pursed his lips.
"He actually just died like that, dead..."
He muttered, a different emotion colored his eyes.
Finally, he sighed and took a sip of tea.
"This is the flavor, his favorite tea."
"When we were younger and making a ruckus at the tea house, he always complained I had too many ideas, then he’d pour me a cup of this tea to quiet me down."
"When Xiaoyi and I got married, he even warned me with a clenched fist to treat Xiaoyi well."
"Decades passed in a blink, how did we end up like this?"
He set down his teacup, looking at the empty seat beside him.
"When was the last time he sat here drinking tea with me?"
"Back then, Xiaoyi was still alive."
"I’m old, old... Go prepare some things to send to the Jiang Family, I won’t go, lest he gets mad enough to come back to life."
The butler was taken aback by these words.
"Yes, but regarding the Jiang Family..."
"Forget it, he’s dead now, and those two children have a tough life, it wasn’t meant to end." Old Mr. Gong chuckled to himself, "I’m old, I can’t believe I’m showing mercy."
"Old Master, the overseas nursing home has been arranged, you can go for a retreat anytime."
"Hmm."
Just as he finished speaking, the door was knocked on. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
He glanced at the butler.
The butler nodded, turned and opened the door.
It was Gong Yao.
Old Mr. Gong’s peripheral vision caught a glimpse, and he frowned subtly.
It was fleeting but still noticed by Gong Yao.
He maintained his expression, carrying something to Old Mr. Gong.
"Dad, you look well; the medicine seems to work."
"Yes, good, I feel much better after taking it."
Old Mr. Gong nodded in agreement.
Gong Yao handed over the medicine in his hand: "This is newly delivered medicine. Since Old Mr. Jiang’s death, I’ve become more worried about your health, so I wanted to bring it sooner."
