Chapter 427: Chapter 427 The Jerk Deserves to Die

Gong Chen looked at Lin Zhiyi and nodded, "Wen Qing is the one behind Du Qian."

Hearing Wen Qing’s name again, a vision of a cruel woman’s face appeared in Lin Zhiyi’s mind.

"If she already knows I’m here, then what about Xingxing..." she asked worriedly. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"If she had the chance to get close to Xingxing, she wouldn’t have gone through Du Qian," Gong Chen wiped his hands and reassured her.

Lin Zhiyi sighed with slight relief, looking at the retreating Du Qian, "Not calling the police—this really won’t be a problem?"

"Calling the police? That’d be so boring. What comes next is far more interesting." Gong Chen tossed the handkerchief into the trash can.

Lin Zhiyi asked doubtfully, "What can he possibly do?"

Gong Chen reminded her, "Du Qian’s mother suffered a head injury and is now partially paralyzed. Right now, he has two options: threaten Wen Qing for money or seek revenge for his mother. If push comes to shove, Wen Qing will have no choice but to grit her teeth and suffer, because Du Qian has truly reached the point where he has nothing left to lose."

This was why Gong Chen had to force Du Qian to reveal his cards before taking action.

He had to ensure that Lin Zhiyi and Xingxing wouldn’t be dragged into this mess.

Lin Zhiyi was half-convinced, "Really? That won’t happen, right?"

Liao Yi, looking serious, nodded, "You guys... What are you even talking about? I don’t understand a single word!"

Not wanting Liao Yi to get too involved, Lin Zhiyi glanced at the time and changed the subject.

"Let’s go, we can still make it to the restaurant for their lobster special."

"Okay."

Liao Yi turned and walked off at once.

Good food can solve anything.

But in the end, they didn’t get to eat that lobster.

On the way back, the shop assistant called Lin Zhiyi to say several customers wanted to check out early.

After what just happened with the Du Family, it was understandable that the customers would feel uncomfortable and want to leave.

As the owner, Lin Zhiyi had to go back and handle it.

When she arrived at the shop, neighbors and staff were already helping clean up, and she quickly stepped forward to thank them.

She also refunded the customers’ payments. Thankfully, it was the low season, so the loss wasn’t too significant.

The customers were reasonable and didn’t press the issue.

By the time everything was taken care of, it was already dark. The neighbor, Sister Zheng, waved her over.

"Everybody stop what you’re doing, come to my place for dinner."

Sister Zheng owned a specialty restaurant on the same street.

Seeing how tired everyone was, Lin Zhiyi nodded, "Thanks, Sister Zheng."

"What’s there to thank me for? When my husband passed away, it was you who lent me money to get by. Without your help, my son and I would have ended up sleeping on the street. Come on, I’ve already had the food prepared."

Liao Yi was the happiest, "Let’s go, I’m starving!"

Lin Zhiyi called everyone to join them.

Sister Zheng walked alongside her and tugged on her sleeve, "Don’t forget about that handsome guy over there. The way he fought earlier—it was like a scene from a movie."

Lin Zhiyi followed her gaze and saw Gong Chen helping to move tables.

Her shop was staffed mostly by women, and those solid wood tables were quite a challenge to carry.

Seeing the staff struggling, Gong Chen had stepped in to help without being asked.

Setting aside his background, he wasn’t all that difficult to get along with.

Thinking this, Lin Zhiyi walked over to him.

"The neighbor invited us for dinner. Are you... coming?"

Gong Chen didn’t answer.

Lin Zhiyi felt a bit awkward. Gong Chen was used to dining in high-end restaurants; it was normal for him to feel out of place at a little local eatery.

Hearing Sister Zheng call her, she turned to leave, but Gong Chen blocked her path.

"In what capacity should I go?" Gong Chen asked.

Lin Zhiyi hesitated, "You’ve been pondering this the whole time?"

"Mm. So, who am I?" Gong Chen countered.

Clearly, Sister Zheng didn’t catch on, nor did she know who Gong Chen was. She simply wanted to play matchmaker between him and Lin Zhiyi.

But the "scumbag" she was referring to... was Gong Chen himself.

Back then, Lin Zhiyi had gone hoarse explaining to everyone that she wasn’t abandoned; it was just a mutual breakup.

But everyone assumed she was still haunted by the shadow of a scumbag.

Later, bizarre rumors even sprang up, claiming she’d had Xingxing after being assaulted and had fled to Gang City to escape the pain.

Worried that Xingxing would be labeled as the child of a rapist, Lin Zhiyi could only go along with the narrative that she’d been abandoned by a scumbag.

Who would’ve thought Sister Zheng would bring it up now?

Just as Lin Zhiyi was about to speak up and stop Sister Zheng from continuing, Gong Chen raised an eyebrow slightly, "A scumbag?"

Sister Zheng sighed, "Yes, the man who tricked Zhiyi into getting pregnant. What a piece of trash! He completely ruined an amazing girl like her. Poor little Xingxing—so adorable—and yet her father turned out to be so irresponsible."

"Zhiyi’s really had a tough time these past few years. Xingxing was born with health issues, and she gritted her teeth and weathered through it all alone. And now, you see, she’s even being smeared by the Du Family."

"Sir, I’ll vouch for you: Zhiyi’s character is beyond reproach. The real problem is that scumbag who tricked her. Scumbags deserve to die."

"Don’t you agree, sir?"

For all her good intentions—defending Lin Zhiyi and ensuring Gong Chen wouldn’t bully her and her daughter—it only made Lin Zhiyi want to bury her face in her hands. She couldn’t dare to look at Gong Chen.

But the man’s eyes never left her.

Gingerly, she lowered her hand and glanced at him, inadvertently meeting his gaze.

His jet-black eyes were like the depths of the night sea, reflecting twinkling stars, murmuring silently.

Then, he nodded slightly, "Mm, deserving indeed."

Lin Zhiyi froze, staring at him dazedly, momentarily oblivious to Sister Zheng handing her a bowl of soup.

Gong Chen stood up, took the bowl with both hands, and placed it in front of her. Leaning in slightly, he softly murmured, "Drink it while it’s hot. You’ll need the energy."

"Oh," Lin Zhiyi snapped back to reality, nodded, and took a sip of soup. Then she paused, sensing something amiss, and asked, "Why would I need more energy?"

Gong Chen’s long lashes framed his half-closed eyes, languid and dangerous, like he was hinting at something.
