Just as the shadow approached, the motion sensor light above Lin Zhiyi’s head suddenly went out.
"Ah!"
She screamed out loud, not expecting that the shadow would be startled by her as well, almost losing balance and tumbling down.
Right at that moment, the motion sensor light came back on.
After seeing each other’s faces, both of them were startled and simultaneously covered their mouths which they had subconsciously agape.
"Zhiyi!"
"Sister Zhou! You scared me to death!" Lin Zhiyi patted her chest.
Sister Zhou leaned against the wall, "I almost died of fright too, I thought it was the echo of my footsteps."
Lin Zhiyi smiled and led her upstairs, all the while listening to her complain that the elevator had the worst timing to break down—could it not have malfunctioned earlier or later but just had to at that moment.
Caught up in their conversation, neither of them noticed the door at the bottom of the stairs swaying slightly.
Inside the door.
The man pretending to be a resident was well trained, striking flesh with each punch, and even though his opponent was Gong Chen, he showed no mercy.
Seeing that he couldn’t overpower Gong Chen, he sinisterly pulled out a dagger from behind and attempted to ambush him.
Gong Chen’s palm was slashed, but he showed no sign of pain. He turned and twisted the man’s neck, and in one second the man’s pupils dilated, passing out.
Gong Chen looked down at the man on the ground from above, blood dripping from his fingertips.
"Third Young Master."
Chen Jin rushed over with a team, promptly handing over a handkerchief.
Gong Chen took the handkerchief and wiped the blood, stating coldly, "He’s a mercenary that only recognizes money, not people. Clean this up properly."
"Yes."
Chen Jin immediately waved to the bodyguards behind him.
After the man was taken away, he looked at Gong Chen worriedly.
"Third Young Master, this is already the fifth time in the last half month, and the second time this week alone. If this continues, he will definitely become suspicious of you."
Upon hearing this, a cold light flashed in Gong Chen’s eyes.
After a moment of contemplation, he threw away the blood-stained handkerchief and said coldly, "The New Year is coming, it’s about time to stir up some excitement for the Gong Family."
Chen Jin nodded in understanding, "Yes, I got it."
Upon returning, Sang Ran immediately came out at the sound of the door opening.
Her smiling face turned into shock upon seeing the blood on Gong Chen’s hand.
"Third Young Master, what happened to your hand? Weren’t you just going to the company to get some things? How did you get hurt?"
Sang Ran took his hand, her eyes filled with distress.
Gong Chen instead patted the back of her hand, as if to comfort her, "I accidentally cut myself, it’s nothing serious."
"Let me take care of it for you." Sang Ran turned to get the medicine box.
"No need, it’s too late, you go to sleep. I still have some documents to take care of."
Gong Chen turned and walked towards the study.
Sang Ran bit her lower lip, looking at his back. Even though he was really gentler with her compared to others, her heart still felt empty.
She mustered her courage, "Third Young Master, I’ve decided to move into the master bedroom, we... we’re about to get engaged and married, aren’t we?"
Her voice grew softer and her cheeks flushed with color.
Gong Chen stopped in his tracks and looked at her indifferently, "Hmm."
Sang Ran contained her smile, "Then I’ll wait for you."
With that, she ran back to the master bedroom.
Sang Ran looked at the impeccably clean walk-in closet, hung up her clothes after tidying a little.
"Why bother telling me to sleep in the guest bedroom if it isn’t tidy, isn’t this clean enough?"
"Could he be... embarrassed?"
Sang Ran looked at their clothes, hanging side by side, reached for one of his nightshirts and pressed it against her face. It had a faint scent of lavender. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
Taking a deep breath, she couldn’t help but fantasize about her life with Gong Chen after marriage.
A moment later, she thought of something and took Gong Chen’s nightshirt to the bathroom.
After Lin Zhiyi and Sister Zhou had climbed the stairs, the elevator happened to be working again.
The two stood at the elevator entrance, cursing for quite a while.
They finally went their separate ways to sleep after having a glass of red wine together.
Hearing this, Lin Zhiyi realized she had forgotten to pull her collar back into place after the doctor had examined her wounds.
She adjusted her collar with a touch of guilt, "I scratched it by accident. I have something to do, I need to go."
"Stop right there!" Li Huan blocked her path again, his tone serious, "When did this start?"
"What are you talking about? I don’t understand," Lin Zhiyi replied, feigning composure.
Li Huan narrowed his eyes, and while she was distracted, he grabbed her hand and lifted her sleeve.
He saw the crisscrossed wounds on her arm, and his face darkened.
Ordinary people would wince at a couple of scratches, let alone wounds like these.
"You’re trying to fool me? Lin Zhiyi, what’s wrong with you?"
Lin Zhiyi pulled back her hand, readjusted her sleeve, and looked at Li Huan solemnly, "Doctor Li, please mind your own business! I said it’s nothing. What? Are you going to tattle again?"
"Lin Zhiyi, don’t be like this," Li Huan started, clearly worried.
"How am I being, exactly? You know very well, don’t you? I suppose you’ve received the invitation too?" Lin Zhiyi retorted coldly.
"..."
"For my sake and for his, it’s best if Doctor Li pretends to know nothing," she added firmly before turning to leave.
Li Huan watched Lin Zhiyi’s noticeably thinner figure walk away, his heart heavy with concern. Reluctantly, he pulled out his phone.
But the screen only showed a WeChat message from Gong Chen sent three minutes earlier.
"The engagement party will be at the Gong family’s. Don’t forget."
Li Huan pursed his lips tightly and ultimately chose to respect Lin Zhiyi’s wishes.
Lin Zhiyi wrapped her scarf tightly around her neck as she left the hospital.
Since she was already out, she decided to buy some extra groceries so she could stay home for the next few days.
While walking to the market, she suddenly heard the roar of a motorbike behind her.
Close to New Year, most of Jing City’s migrant workers had returned to their hometowns, so the market was rather deserted.
The road was more than wide enough for a bike to pass by, so Lin Zhiyi didn’t bother looking back.
Not until the noise made her heart skip a beat. She instinctively turned around just in time to see the motorbike coming straight at her.
The front of the bike lifted, and the rapidly spinning wheel hurtled towards her head...
