"No way, how did Karina manage the extradition so fast? Something’s fishy!" I said to Mitch, baffled. The whole situation didn’t add up; Karina was supposed to be in custody.
Mitch frowned, "Must be her lawyer pulled some strings. She's been abroad for years and treated some pretty influential folks. Bet she's got tricks up her sleeve."
Stella rolled her eyes so hard I thought they’d get stuck. "I've noticed something about the women close to Neil; they're like cockroaches, impossible to squash. Just like Bonnie, there's always some blind soul ready to bail them out."
That hit home. My entanglement with Neil made me feel just as indestructible; I've even come back from the dead.
"And where’s Hiram now?" That was my main concern.
"He's abroad too. That nutjob Karina admitted she smuggled Hiram out of an orphanage, and that Dylan was her accomplice. So, there’s no blood relation between Hiram, Karina, and Neil. No chance either of them could claim custody."
My heart sank, and I fell silent, realizing there was nothing I could do but wait for news from Neil’s end.
After a while, Stella and Mitch had to leave to check on their kids. Despite having several nannies, they were still uneasy. I was left alone, feeling weak but reassured knowing my mom would soon visit.
The room quieted down, leaving me with my thoughts. Hesitating at first, I eventually dialed Faith’s number.
Thankfully, Faith picked up, already aware of my poisoning. She sounded genuinely concerned, "Irene, how are you feeling? Are you in a regular ward now? Any discomfort?"
"I’m doing okay, just wondering about Hiram’s whereabouts. I heard he was sent abroad?" I cut straight to the chase.
Faith sighed, "Yes, I’m abroad too, only Ryan stayed back to manage the business. The orphanage took Hiram, and Neil’s tied up dealing with Karina, so he hasn’t been in touch."
Surprised, I wondered why Faith would go abroad too.
Sensing my silence, Faith explained, "Irene, you don’t have to worry. We know how much you care for Hiram. Even though he’s not of Whitmore blood, we’ve grown fond of him. For your sake and ours, Neil will bring him back. But you know, Karina’s made quite a web of connections here; it’ll take time to untangle if she interferes."
I quickly got out of bed and called Russel, hoping to catch Louis before he could disappear again.
"Hey?" Russel answered the call swiftly, background noise suggesting he was not in a quiet place, and the snippets of conversation I could catch were all in English, hinting he might not be in the country.
"Russel, do you have any idea where Louis is right now?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. Given that Russel and Karina seemed to be on the same side, it wasn't a stretch to think he'd be in cahoots with Louis too. My question was more a gamble on his willingness to help me out.
The person I had seen earlier, I suspected it was Louis, but without a clear view of his face, I couldn't be certain.
If Louis was out to get me, it wasn't just because I was Neil's ex-wife. Karina had to be a factor in this equation, which meant Russel couldn't possibly be clueless about what was going on.
"I'm not sure. I'm currently abroad. What's happened?" Russel's response caught me off guard. Could he genuinely be out of the loop?
