“We’ll settle the score later, but handle it quietly. No bodies. More importantly, there’s something else I need to ask you.”
“What is it?”
“Did you and Michelle... actually sleep together?”
“I...” Tyler shifted uncomfortably, avoiding her gaze.
“Tyler, Michelle is the sister of a very old, very dear friend of mine. She means a lot to me. I know she has feelings for you. I expect you to take care of her. Her mother just passed away, and she’s entirely alone in the world now. When you have free time, check in on her. I’m trusting you with her safety. I don't care how complicated things are between you two, just remember this: I refuse to see her hurt. Do you understand me?”
Tyler nodded rigidly.
“Understood, Boss.”
“Good. I’m heading out. Take care of Michelle.” Elena gave his shoulder a firm pat.
“Boss...” Tyler blurted out, unable to stop himself.
Elena paused and turned back to look at him. “Is there something you want to tell me?”
She could sense that Tyler was holding something heavy inside.
“No... nothing... just... I’ll miss you.” Tyler debated speaking his mind but swallowed the words instead.
Some secrets were better left buried for now.
“Alright then. I’m off.”
Watching Elena walk away, Tyler felt a crushing weight settle in his chest.
-
Nighttime.
The wind off the river was biting, carrying a sharp chill.
Elena sat on the grassy bank, nursing a can of beer.
The sky was full of stars, perfectly reflected on the rippling water, making it look as though an entire galaxy was flowing right in front of her.
