Facing Allan’s genuine hostility, Nate backed down. He could bully Jon, who had no backing, but provoking the Morton family would cause trouble for his parents. He revved his engine and sped off.
“You okay, Jon?” Allan asked, pivoting instantly to concern.
“I’m fine,” Jon muttered.
“That kid has no vision. Just give the word, Jon, and I’ll ruin him. As your loyal follower, I am ready to go through fire and water for you,” Allan said with solemn dedication.
Jon sighed. “Please stop.”
“Jon!” Elena’s voice cut through the air.
“Sis!” Jon’s face lit up.
“Mom said you forgot your book. You’re always so scatterbrained.” Elena handed him the text.
“Thanks, Sis.”
“Hi! Hello, Sis!” Allan waved enthusiastically, his grin stretching ear to ear.
Elena recognized him as one of the boys who had previously bullied Jon. Her eyes narrowed.
“Sis, don’t look at me like that! I’ve reformed! I am now Jon’s dedicated sidekick. I swear I’ll never bully him again!” Allan raised his hands in surrender.
Elena looked at Jon, who pulled her aside. “What is going on with him?”
“I don’t know. He suddenly started sucking up to me. It’s weird.”
“Regardless of why, he’s a resource. Use him. With Allan as a shield, people won’t mess with you at school.”
