"That night, it started to rain. I begged my mother from outside, but she pretended not to hear me. I fainted on the ground, soaked to the bone. I was just a little kid back then. It was Mrs. Sinclair who came over, picked me up, and took care of me all night without resting."
"Anna told me I had a high fever that night. Mrs. Sinclair didn't leave my side until the fever broke at dawn. Because of that, I've always been grateful to her, especially since my own mother never treated me that way."
"Even when I was sick, my mother didn't care. If it was serious, she would just tell the servants to handle it. She was only good to my brother, Patrick. If Patrick had a fever, she would hold him day and night, comforting him. But with me, it was a completely different attitude. Back then, I really wished Mrs. Sinclair was my mother."
Elena looked at Dylan and reached out to hold his hand tightly.
"Don't be sad. You have me now, don't you? And my parents treat you well too!" Elena comforted him.
Dylan smiled with relief and squeezed Elena's hand back.
"I used to be sad, but I'm not anymore. I see things clearly now. No matter how my mother treats me, I won't let it bother me."
The two exchanged a smile. Elena knew that Dylan's heart had grown stronger.
That was why he didn't care anymore.
Just like her—when she was little, she craved the love of her foster parents, Thomas and Melissa Sterling. But when a person reaches a certain level of heartbreak and disappointment, they stop having expectations.
She didn't need it anymore.
Later, Dylan drove Elena back to Evergold Heights.
He then went to the office.
When Elena returned, she found that neither Amanda nor Daniel were home.
"Elwood, where is my mom?" Elena asked the butler.
"Miss Elena, the madam went to attend young master Jon's parent-teacher conference. Isn't he graduating soon?"
"Okay, I see."
Elena had classes at the university in the afternoon, so she freshened up and prepared to leave.
