Elena was already used to her brother’s childish antics.
“Pretty good, right?” Ben grinned. “I sang for Elise earlier—she said it sounded great!”
Dylan forced an awkward smile. “As long as you’re happy, Ben.”
After they finished visiting Ben and stepped out, they saw Justin waiting outside, as if he’d come specifically for them.
“Elena, can I talk to you?” Justin asked.
He looked noticeably more haggard these past few days—probably because of everything with Claire.
“Okay,” Elena agreed.
They walked off to the side. Justin said awkwardly, “Honestly, I shouldn’t be bothering you, but I don’t have any other choice. Claire won’t respond to me anymore—I can’t even see her. Can you help me? I know what happened last time was my family’s fault, but I really can’t give her up.”
“I can help,” Elena said, “but in the end we still have to respect Claire’s wishes. If she truly wants to cut contact with you, there’s nothing I can do.”
Relief softened Justin’s face. “Okay. Thank you.”
After Justin left, Dylan came over.
“He came to you about Claire, didn’t he?” Dylan asked. “And you said yes?”
“Yeah.” Elena nodded. “These past few days, Claire’s been down too. I’m worried about her. I know she likes Justin—she’s only refusing him because she’s thinking about her family. So I want to give them a chance. That way, at least she won’t have regrets.”
Elena still remembered the day they went to the Whelan family—when Claire first saw Justin, the light in her eyes had been impossible to hide.
Elena had noticed it all. She didn’t want Claire to suffer like this anymore.
“Whatever you decide, I’m with you,” Dylan said, his gaze full of tenderness.
The next evening.
Elena set up a gathering and invited a few friends to go have fun at Vivid Nights.
“Elena, it’s your friends’ thing. I don’t have to go,” Claire said.
“Come on, dear,” Elena coaxed. “You’ve been unhappy lately. Let’s go have some fun.”
In the end, Elena insisted and brought Claire along.
Dylan, Theresa, and the others were already there.
“Hi, Claire!” Theresa greeted her with a smile.
