Her face was severe, the kind that belonged to someone humorless and calculating.
Her brow, however, bore a strong resemblance to Daniel's.
"Oh, Amanda, you're finally here! You've kept us waiting!"
The speaker was Christine Whelan from the second branch.
Amanda smiled apologetically. "I... we got stuck in traffic on the bus, so we're late."
"Mother, I brought some fresh vegetables from our garden. I picked them just this morning. They're very fresh, pesticide-free, and good for your health..."
Amanda tried to present the gift to the matriarch, hoping to curry favor.
Unexpectedly, another woman cut her off.
"Amanda, enough. Are you looking down on our family? Do you think we can't afford vegetables? Why bring this trash when you come to visit?" The speaker was Lauren Whelan from the third branch.
The rest of the Whelan family snickered quietly.
Amanda lowered her head, unsure of what to say, appearing deeply self-conscious.
"Alright. Butler, take the things she brought away. Don't dirty the carpet," the matriarch said.
Her tone was deeply unpleasant.
Birds of a feather indeed flocked together.
Elena looked at the members of the second and third branches. They were all dripping in gold and silver, holding themselves in high regard.
They were all daughters-in-law of the Whelan family, yet why did her own mother have absolutely no status?
It was blatant discrimination.
The matriarch's gaze finally settled on Elena.
"Is this the one swapped back from the Sterling family?"
"Yes, this is Elena. Elena, hurry and call her Grandmother!" Amanda pushed Elena forward slightly.
"Grandmother," Elena called out reluctantly.
Only because she was an elder.
