Thomas collapsed into a chair, ripping off his tie and throwing his suit jacket on the floor. He looked like a broken man, finally realizing the Sterling family was past the point of no return.
...
That evening, the Whelan family gathered for dinner.
"Elena, did you hear?" Amanda asked suddenly.
"Hear what?"
"About the Sterlings. It's all over the news. That actor, Spencer, got caught for tax evasion. And Emily... I can't believe Spencer and Emily would do... *that*."
Amanda gossiped freely. Except for Ben, everyone at the table knew exactly what happened but kept quiet. With the news blowing up online, it was impossible to miss. Chris and Claire felt that Emily was a Sterling now, so it wasn't their problem. They just treated it like tabloid drama.
"Mom, I don't care about the Sterlings anymore," Elena said calmly.
"You're right. Why mention them? Their downfall is their own karma. Let's talk about something else. Today, the main estate called. They want the whole family to come over for dinner. What do you think?" Daniel asked.
Jon immediately piped up. "I'm not going!"
He hated Nate Whelan, who always bragged and bullied him.
"I'm not going either. I'm used to not being included," Chris said.
"Me neither. I'm with Chris," Claire added.
Daniel sighed heavily.
Amanda saw his hesitation. "Do you want to go back?"
"I didn't want to, but I heard Mother is sick. Seriously sick. If I don't go, it wouldn't be right. She is my mother, after all."
