Gu Shan quickly masked his shock and was the first to speak, surprisingly with a note of concern in his voice. "Gu Zi, it’s not easy on you—being so heavily pregnant and still running around handling all this family mess for the both of us."
But Zhang Mei’s face was a storm cloud of gloom, dark and impenetrable. Her eyes glinted with venom as she jabbed a finger sharply at Gu Zi. "Gu Zi, how dare you show up here at the police station? Who told you to meddle in this? Ungrateful little wretch, is this how you repay me for raising you with all my sweat and tears?"
Her voice cracked with fury as she continued, "You’re always siding with your birth family, turning against us. You were always against me and Miao Miao at every turn. And now, you come all the way back here just to make our lives miserable. What’s wrong with you? Has a dog eaten your heart?"
Her trembling frame barely contained the rage, her shrill words slicing through the tense air like a blade. The fire in her eyes seemed ready to swallow Gu Zi whole.
But Gu Zi neither flinched nor lost her composure. She met Zhang Mei’s fury with a cool, measured tone. "Let’s stop pretending. You’ve long been cut off from me. My birth family’s sister-in-law runs a restaurant and has been falsely accused. Of course, I’m going to demand a full investigation. If you haven’t done anything wrong, why are you so rattled?"
Zhang Mei’s chest heaved with anger at that, her voice rising sharply. "We’ve done nothing wrong! It’s you who has the nerve to file a complaint. That’s utterly unreasonable."
Gu Zi didn’t bother with pleasantries. "The Gu family’s finances must be tight these days, right? Sister Hua’s Gourmet Shop has been running for over a year now. In such a short time, we’ve opened two shops—one in town, one in the city—and countless customers have never had a single problem with the food. So why is it only your family who gets food poisoning?"
Hearing this, Zhang Mei’s strength seemed to drain from her body.
Gu Shan was quick to recover and barked at her, "Enough! At this point, stop covering for that unfilial daughter of yours. I never agreed to any of this. You insisted on letting Lin Miao teach the Lin family a lesson, and behind my back, you drugged me. It was cruel—I almost died because of that ungrateful girl. Captain He, you must see justice done. I’m not in cahoots with those mother and daughter."
Zhang Mei was dumbfounded. She had thought no matter how much her husband despised Lin Miao, he’d at least protect her a little because she was his biological daughter. But now, he had completely distanced himself, wiping his hands clean of any blame, effectively pushing both her and Lin Miao out to save himself.
"Gu Shan, you heartless man! How dare you say such things? Aren’t you afraid the heavens will strike you down?" she hissed through clenched teeth.
