Chapter 1054: Glowing
Gu Zi vividly remembered mentioning once that Su Shen looked great in dress shirts. Ever since then, he had practically lived in the ones she bought for him—wearing them to work, at home, and even rolling up his sleeves to water the vegetables in the backyard.
It was as if he wanted to weld the shirts onto his body.
The thought suddenly struck her—he ran a pig farm. Did that mean he was wearing a dress shirt even when he helped out at the slaughterhouse? The image was too absurd to entertain.
Su Shen, with one hand on the steering wheel, spoke in his usual calm tone. “I’m used to it now. You like seeing me in them, so I’ve gotten used to wearing them.”
Gu Zi was momentarily thrown off by his words. What did he mean, ‘because she liked it, he got used to it’?
Since when did this older man become so smooth with his words?
She almost wondered if someone had taken over his body. But she decided not to dwell on it. If he was comfortable in them, then so be it—he did look good, after all.
Before long, they arrived at the Su family’s courtyard.
The moment the car stopped, Gu Zi hopped out and hurried inside. There was nothing like coming home after a trip—everything felt extra cozy.
Her pace quickened unconsciously, and the moment she stepped through the door, the rich aroma of food greeted her. She turned back to Su Shen, eyes alight. “Su Bing is cooking lunch for us—it smells amazing! That kid is really something!”
Though Gu Zi had taught Su Bing plenty of recipes, she rarely let him cook alone. No matter how mature he seemed, he was still a child, and she wasn’t comfortable letting him handle the kitchen unsupervised. So the fact that he had managed to prepare a meal for the entire family on his own was truly impressive.
What’s more, despite her and Su Shen being out for so long, Su Li had been at home with Gao Ming and Su Le, and there hadn’t been any chaos. It was clear that Su Bing had things under control. The younger ones actually listened to him!
If things kept going this way, Gu Zi mused, she could probably retire at thirty and leave the household in Su Bing’s capable hands.
Su Shen, catching the scent of the food as well, nodded approvingly. If even the discerning Gu Zi was praising it, then Su Bing’s skills had definitely improved.
“You go rest,” he said. “I’ll go help him in the kitchen.”
The moment Su Shen disappeared into the kitchen, Su Li and the two younger children swarmed around Gu Zi. Su Li asked with concern, “Mom, those bad guys didn’t give you any trouble, did they?”
Gu Zi chuckled. “The police already caught them. They won’t be causing any more trouble—not for me or anyone else.”
Su Bing’s face brightened at the indirect compliment. “Mom, I spent all summer learning from you. I can take over cooking from now on.”
Gu Zi shook her head. “You can’t just focus on cooking. Actually, I’ve already planned something for your summer vacation.”
She glanced at the kids, a knowing smile playing on her lips. “Su Bing and Su Li will each enroll in a summer class to learn a new skill. As for Su Le, it’s time for her to start training with her father in basic martial arts.”
All three children were exceptionally talented in their own ways. Letting those talents go to waste would be a shame. Now that Su Bing and Su Li were growing older, it was time for them to start learning seriously.
She wasn’t going to be like Xu Sheng’s mom, packing their schedules to the brim with classes and leaving no room for rest.
But they couldn’t just spend every summer and winter break playing around like they had in the countryside, either.
And as for Su Le—though she was still young, it wasn’t too early to start building a strong foundation.
Gu Zi was determined that her daughter would not meet the same tragic fate as in the original novel. This time, Su Le would grow up happy, strong, and fearless—the kind of modern girl who could take on the world.
