Chapter 9
When Elena heard that name, her face darkened with fury. She helped Freya up and stormed straight to Jasper’s office.
“Mia, what the actual hell? Freya hasn’t done a damn thing to you–who gave you the right to make her kneel outside like some medieval punishment? She works for my brother, not you. Stop playing Queen B around here!”
Jasper was there too. His eyes narrowed at Freya’s wrecked appearance, but before he could speak, Mia launched herself into his arms.
“Jasper, I swear I didn’t do anything! Why would I randomly make her kneel outside? I don’t know why she’s throwing me under the bus…”
Hearing this blatant lie, Elena snapped. She marched up and slapped Mia hard across the face.
“Bullshit! Freya doesn’t lie!”
Mia had never been checked like this in her life. She immediately clutched her cheek and turned on the waterworks. “Jasper, your assistant is trashing me, and now your sister is getting physical? Fine. You’ve made your choice clear. We’re through.”
At those words, panic flashed across Jasper’s face. His expression hardened as he stood up and slapped Elena.
“Enough! Elena, what the hell is wrong with you? Mia is going to be your sister–in–law!”
Then he turned his icy glare on Freya. “And you–making up stories about Mia? Pull this crap again and you’re fired on the spot!”
Elena stood shocked, hand on her stinging cheek, staring at her brother like she didn’t recognize him.
Freya immediately regretted dragging her into this mess and pulled her from the office.
Elena was still seething, ready to go back for round two, until Freya revealed she’d already quit and was leaving New York for good.
Hearing this, Elena’s anger crumbled into grief. She clung to Freya, sobbing and begging her to stay.
Freya just rubbed her back, fighting tears herself. “Elena, nothing lasts forever.”
That only made Elena cry harder.

Freya bugged Elena one last time and walked through the gate.
Before boarding, the composed one final message to Jasper
“Light years loving you in silence, four years pretending it was enough. This is the end of the line. Mr. Whitemore, I’m no longer your assistant. I no longer have feelings for you. We’re just two strangers now. In this lifetime, let’s never cross paths again.”
After hitting send, she didn’t wait for a reply. She blocked his number, email, and social accounts.
Then, without a backward glance, she boarded the plane.
