The matriarch’s face was ashen with rage. “Mrs. Quinn, watch your tone.”
Mrs. Quinn walked right up to Ann and said in front of everyone, “Little bitch, go back and tell that old bitch that she can run, but she can’t hide.”
With that, Mrs. Quinn turned and swept out of the room.
Ann was so overcome with shame that she couldn't lift her head for a long time. It wasn't just the matriarch who was losing face; every member of the Harvest family looked utterly mortified.
Yet, the matriarch remained resolute. “The ceremony will continue!”
Ignoring the strange looks from the crowd, Ann quickly walked over to Kenny and his wife. “Kenny, Jackie.”
Kenny put an arm around his wife and took a step back. “Grandma, you and our parents are the elders. Your recognition is what matters. We of the younger generation don’t need these formalities.”
Kenny was no fool. If one person claimed Ann and her aunt had character flaws, it might be a slander. But when two, three, and even more people said the same, there was bound to be some truth to it.
Hearing Kenny's words, Ann couldn't help but grind her teeth. Was he publicly rejecting her?
Jackie instantly understood her husband's cue. Before the matriarch could erupt, she preemptively let out a soft “Oh!” and collapsed into her husband's arms.
Jackie feigned weakness, pressing a hand to her temple and leaning against her husband. “Honey, I suddenly feel so dizzy.”
Benton rushed forward. “Jackie, could you be pregnant?”
The matriarch, concerned, urged, “Kenny, quickly take your wife upstairs and check her pulse.”
Fidelia grabbed her sister-in-law's arm. “Are you thirsty, Jackie? I’ll go get you some water.”
Kenny shot his siblings a meaningful look, then swept his wife into his arms and hurried upstairs. Benton, Gideon, and Fidelia seized the opportunity to follow.
