At three in the afternoon, in the CEO's office of the Ferguson Group.
Mark knocked and entered, placing two invitations on York's desk. "Mr. Ferguson, Mr. Dailey Jordan of Apex Capital is hosting a charity gala and has specifically invited you and Miss Darleen to grace the event."
Just then, Darleen knocked and came in. Mark went to make coffee.
York stood up. "Why aren't you at school today?"
Darleen plopped down in York's office chair, her face a mask of gloom. "Grandpa's forcing me to go to the Jordan family's charity gala. I said one thing against it, and Dad yelled at me. That Dailey Jordan has been chasing me for three years and still won't give up. York, you have to help me think of a way out."
York's long, elegant fingers tapped lightly on the desk. "Since Grandpa has already accepted the invitation, it wouldn't be right not to go. Just make an appearance to humor them."
Darleen shot up from the chair. "York, you know what Grandpa is trying to do. Are you really okay with me going alone?"
York pushed the two invitations toward her. "If you don't want Grandpa arranging your engagement for you, then you need to find someone you like and get engaged yourself before he forces you."
"Finding a man isn't like buying a handbag! It's not that easy!"
Furious, Darleen snatched the invitations and stormed out.
Mark saw her to the door and returned. "Mr. Ferguson, are you really comfortable letting Miss Darleen go by herself?"
York's eyes lowered. "Every lock has its key. Someone will go with her."
His sister was just stubbornly oblivious. She kept insisting Peter was like a brother to her, and Peter, afraid of ruining their friendship, had never dared to confess his feelings. In his past life, York had let them be, and their relationship stagnated. He had died without ever seeing them get together.
