It was her birthday, and if people didn't go out of their way to talk to her, she was happy to ignore them. If she'd had her way, she would have much rather been at home with her parents and brother, sharing a simple birthday cake.

Rae Blake pulled Claudia into a quiet corner. "Claudia, the whole place is decked out in white roses. You don't think York is going to propose again tonight, do you?"

Darleen sidled up behind them. "Claudia, do you think my brother has a surprise for you?"

Claudia scoffed inwardly. She had no idea if York had a 'surprise' for her, but she definitely had a big one planned for him.

The person she was waiting for should be arriving any minute.

While the three of them were chatting, Gideon walked in with Fidelia Harvest. Claudia went to greet him. "Gideon."

He handed her a gift, then prompted Fidelia to be polite and introduce herself.

Fidelia beamed at Claudia, her smile as bright as a flower. "You're so beautiful, Claudia! Are you going to be my future sister-in-law?"

Gideon’s expression turned stern. "Fidelia, don’t talk nonsense."

Claudia felt a bit awkward. "Miss Harvest, I’m hardly a match for your brother."

Gideon quickly apologized. "Fidelia’s been spoiled rotten by us three brothers. She has no filter, so please don't take her seriously."

Fidelia, however, clung to Claudia’s arm, wheedling playfully. "Claudia, my brother never goes to girls' birthday parties. You’re the first! I've done the math—you're definitely going to be my sister-in-law!"

Claudia was speechless.

Gideon clamped a hand over Fidelia’s mouth, grabbed her by the collar with the other, and practically dragged her out of the room.

Rae Blake whispered in Claudia’s ear, "You know, this Gideon guy is pretty great. You should consider him."

Claudia shot Rae Blake a look.
