Fiona planted a hand on her hip and pointed at Backus. “You're going to call your sister right now and tell her to get back here immediately!”
Backus stood there, looking conflicted, his head bowed. “Ann's already had a child. The Fergusons are the most powerful family in Capital City. Why would they want a woman who's had a baby with someone else?”
Fiona reached out and twisted his ear. “Didn't you hear what those two women said? York is fighting with his family and even canceled the wedding! He must be waiting for your sister to come back!”
“So what if she's had a child with another man?” Fiona pressed on. “As long as York doesn't care, she still has a chance to marry into that family!”
She leaned in conspiratorially. “If your sister insists that she was forced to go abroad by that old bastard, York's grandfather, who could prove otherwise?”
“Men are all the same,” she sneered. “They always want what they can't have.”
“When your sister comes back, York will believe she was persecuted by his grandfather, forced to marry someone else, and forced to have a child all for his sake. He'll be overwhelmed with guilt and pity! Any compensation he gives her will be more than enough for us to live on for generations!”
“You have to listen to me on this,” Fiona commanded. “Get your sister back here before November eighth. She has to see York before that other woman's birthday. We can't let anyone else take this opportunity!”
Backus hesitated before pulling out his phone. “Fiona, of the sixty million Ann got back then, most of it was scammed away by her classmate. Besides the house we bought, you used the rest of the money we got to pay off your brother's gambling debts. Ann isn't divorced yet, and she doesn't even have the money for a plane ticket. How is she supposed to get back in such a short time?”
Fiona threw herself onto the ground, wailing and pointing an accusing finger at Backus.
“I must have had eight lifetimes of bad luck to marry a spineless loser like you!”
“You have no skills, no family connections! Since we got married, we've been living off this stall from my family, raising two kids! What's wrong with using your sister's money to pay off my brother's gambling debts?”
“Now that we finally have a chance to make something of ourselves, you're full of excuses! If you're so capable, then stop relying on my family and go out and make your own money!”
