York’s arms tightened around Claudia. “Let’s go home, please? The one I’ve always wanted is you. I don’t love anyone else. I only have you!”
“York, you’re about to get engaged to Miss Windsor,” Claudia reminded him. “We’re both going to have our own separate lives. You need to wake up and be rational. This is only going to cause me more trouble.”
“I’m not getting engaged to anyone! I only want you! Tell me, what do I have to do for you to forgive me?”
York held her so tightly she couldn’t escape. She had no choice but to soften her tone again. “York, you’ve always been so dignified, proud, and calm. This isn’t like you. Can’t you just—”
“The old me!” York cut her off, his control snapping. He loosened his grip slightly, his crimson eyes boring into hers as he looked down.
His voice choked. “The old me thought you would never leave me. Never!”
Their eyes met, and Claudia looked away.
Once, even she had believed she would never leave York. Not even in death.
York’s emotions teetered on the edge of collapse. Her silence enraged him. “Why? Why can you laugh and talk with everyone else, but you can’t even have a normal conversation with me?”
“Just because I made one mistake, you give me a death sentence!” he yelled, his voice cracking. “You won’t even give me a chance to make it right!”
“Claudia,” he pleaded, his voice breaking, “are you planning to torture me with your indifference for the rest of my life?”
By the end, his eyes were filled with agony. He hunched over her, almost bowing in his desperation, his eyes bloodshot and his voice trembling. “Claudia, it’s me. It’s your York. Please, come home with me.”
As he spoke the last few words, a tear escaped the corner of his eye.
Claudia glanced discreetly at the car nearby and seized the opportunity. “I’ll listen to you,” she said softly. “Let me take you home.”
He looked at her, his red-rimmed eyes flashing with a moment of surprise, which quickly turned to suspicion.
Meeting his doubtful gaze, Claudia took his arm. “You were just in the hospital this morning for your stomach, and then you went straight out for a business dinner tonight,” she said gently. “There’s still some food in the fridge. When we get back, I’ll make you a bowl of soup.”
