On their way, they encountered the same guard who had sold them the special room last night. His face was swollen, with lumps and bruises scattered all over.
The red palm prints had yet to fade from his skin, and it was clear that they had come from a woman!
The moment the guard saw them, especially Nanzhi, a sharp pain shot through his face. He fled the scene in a hurry, as though he had seen a ghost.
Feng Ran and the others exchanged a suspicious glance.
"Sister-in-law, did you pay him a visit last night?"
"If I wanted to beat him up, I wouldn't do it so sneakily," Nanzhi replied. "Besides, I don't have that much free time."
Indeed!
The others nodded in agreement.
Sister Nan/ Sister-in-law didn't care much about the place or the time!
As Nanzhi pondered, she wondered why last night had been so peaceful. According to the way villains usually operated, night was always their favorite time to cause chaos. Yet, no one had barged into their break room to rob them.
The only people she had dealt with were the four lecherous men who had harassed Zhao Lin.
She recalled that she had slapped one of them so hard he had screamed like a dying pig.
No wonder she had found one of the voices familiar. It turned out one of them was the guard!
As soon as this thought passed through her mind, she and Nanzhi ran into three more people, each with bruised and battered faces, just like the guard.
These three men froze in fear and fled the moment they saw her, as though a monster were chasing them.
Zhao Lin, who had seen Nanzhi and Lin Weihao boarding the car, walked over and properly thanked them for last night.
Cho Jin and Helen Wu noticed her and followed, catching up.
Zhao Lin pulled out a small package wrapped in a plastic bag from her bag and placed them in Nanzhi's lap. Nanzhi could feel that it contained biscuits, a packet of noodles, and a bottle of water.
She had seen Zhao Lin's teammate's dinner, which consisted only of two packets of biscuits and one packet of noodles. This girl might have skipped her dinner last night to save these for them.
"This is all I have. Once we reach the base, I promise I'll repay you more!" Zhao Lin said with a warm smile.
Zhao Lin had always been straightforward. After handing over the supplies, she turned around and returned to her team without looking back.
Nanzhi's hands froze mid-air. The woman sprinted off before she could even return it. But judging from her observation last night, Zhao Lin would probably not take it back. She can return it with something else later.
Just as Nanzhi was about to close the door, two more figures appeared in her peripheral vision.
It was Cho Jin and Helen Wu.
The virtual crops not only enhanced physical strength but also improved skin quality. Over the months, Nanzhi's appearance had gradually transformed—from slightly weathered skin to flawless, fair skin.
It was clear that Cho Jin didn't believe what Lin Weihao had said. He thought Lin Weihao was just saying those words to please the woman beside him.
Cho Jin didn't pursue the matter further but still turned to thank Nanzhi.
"We're planning to head to the Longmen Base. We've heard from others that it's safe, and the management is offering special privileges for awakeners. The base is also abundant in supplies. How about you?"
Nanzhi raised an eyebrow. "Likewise. We're looking for someone."
She was searching for Lu Meiying and Lu Chenyu, and the best chance of finding them lay at Longmen Base.
(A/N: Longmen – Dragon Gate)
Unlike Cho Jin's tame expression, Helen Wu's expression faltered the moment she heard Lin Weihao say the woman beside him was his wife.
But Helen Wu's status as the Media Queen wasn't for nothing. She quickly adjusted her expression, realizing she had let her mask slip.
She flashed a sweet smile and said, "Oh, you two are together? That's wonderful! It must be very reassuring to have someone by your side in times like this. I mean, not everyone is strong enough to survive alone, right? I'm thankful to Brother Cho, too! Without him, I'd probably be worse off. Haha, sorry, I didn't mean anything by that! Wishing you both happiness!"
Her words, though seemingly innocent, carried an underlying implication. If replayed in one's mind, it was clear she was subtly insinuating that Nanzhi was merely relying on Lin Weihao and wouldn't survive without him.
Yu Baoyin, sitting in the backseat, frowned. Was it just her imagination, or did Helen Wu just refer to Sister Nan as a weakling?
